A Specter Haunting Corellia (Kress, Jedi, Alliance)

Post by Emic Lai » Thu May 27, 2021 5:36 am

Cigarra smoke floated through the stagnant air. A cheap apartment, so out of the way as to be forgotten about, run by some landlord who hadn’t been there in years and had no idea who the current tenant was. That landlord would not be getting next month's rent.

Through the foggy air, bouncing off a window that overlooked the speeder routes beyond, muted out by the thick walls of the half-mile-high structure this apartment was nestled within, echoed an encrypted broadcast. Audio only, recited calmly and slowly by a masculine voice with a thick Imperial accent, precise and posh. “12. 1. 44. 10. 19. 19. 1. 5. 53. 10. 1. 9. 20. 6. 3. 1.”

Unconventionally, a pen was scribbling across paper, taking down the numbers into a matrix. The numbers were decoded into a message, only a minute after the conclusion of the message. The message was read, containing commands, and then the paper on which it was written was deposited into an ashtray and set alight with the lit cigarra.

“Look alive,” said the black-painted lips to another, as the hand dropped the pen and picked up a blaster. The red-and-black tattoos stood up from the chair, puffing once more from the cigarra and putting it out, retrieving the burning paper and dousing it with a flick of the wrist. The remaining data on it was all they needed. The blaster slid smoothly into the holster over an undershirt, covered quickly by a jacket.

The Chief smiled. Her Kings were stationed across the Corellia sector, but none got the privilege she did just now. They were in Intel’s listening posts, ensuring anyone who began to suspect their operations disappeared. The Chief though; she was lucky enough to get an operations role.

“Alright, goldilocks,” she said to her partner for this op. She had seen her recent work; came a long way from Vorpa’ya. “We’ve gotta get to the industrial sector and cause a fuel backup in the pipeline.” She packed a jacket pocket with chewstim and a holo that she wasn’t going to use and zipped it up. She explained further. “And-- you know-- pop.”

“Got download access for the blueprints of the pipeline. Get it started then we’ll get moving.” She tossed the paper to her partner before slipping on a woven brimless cap and a scarf. Damn, this was the real thrill. You knew there would be blood, Corellia. You’ll be up to your knees in it soon.

The soft, uneven cushions of an old sofa cradled a sprawling figure who seemed more than happy to breathe in the second hand smoke off of an inked zabrak's cigarra. The flaxen woman in black rolled onto her stomach, lengthy tresses blanketing her shoulders and spilling onto the carpet as a twinkle in her gaze gave away their shared excitement. She held up her own head and peaked out behind carbon weaved fingers of her coal colored gloves.

"Finally! I was starting to get comfortable here~" Kressara purred and pushed herself up just in time to catch the paper that was cast her way. Two fingers clamped around the download access and without hesitation Emic's partner in crime brought up a screen on her data watch. Her fingertips plugged in the numbers and set the download in motion, then stood from her sunken in seat with a spine popping stretch.

"So we pop this line, cause some damage...then what?"

She reached for a reinforced trench coat that had been draped over the back of the couch and slipped it on over her usual armored bodysuit and gear, flipping her hair free from it's collar. In the pocket was a tin of something Kressara practically couldn't live without at this point, which she removed with none too much discretion. Pills, though whatever they were was uncertain as the container was devoid of labels. Kress knocked back one of the little capsules and swallowed hard to down the thing dry, but coughed and nearly spit the darned pill out. She sauntered into the kitchen and dipped her head into the sink, turning the nozzle for a drink of cool tap water. Classy.

"Alright...that'll do me."

An endlessness of darkness is hovering. The sound of the silence is deafening...Ten billion decibels shattering.

"Ah, home sweet home. The cities are as bad as I remember them to be, the forests are boring, pollution is everywhere and the people are either miserable or horrible."
He paused to take a deep breath. A smile formed on his face.
"I love being back."

Corellia, Adar's homeworld. He had only lived here for 12 years before leaving with his father, but those were the best days of his life. He always disliked the fact that the planet was an industrial world, but that did not stop him from having fun and enjoying himself. Corellia wasn't always the safer planet for a child to grow on, but Adar was a smart kid and managed to avoid the worst and get an education. His familly lived in poverty, barely affording a house, and that poverty would haunt him until today. But despite all that, he liked being back. It was that feeling of being home, being somewhere familliar. But of course, he wasn't here to visit his family, assuming they were still here.

The Council was initially skeptical sending Adar to his homeworld. He was still a padawan and still had deep attachments. However, he was among the few available Jedi that knew Corellia as well as he did. The Galactic Alliance had received reports of unusual disappearances across the Corellian sector. They would have initially classified them as regional crime-related, but the reports had not come from their official security forces. One of the GA's covert agent had sent these reports, and the GA lost all contact with him afterwards. Something much bigger than a local crime lord was happening, and they requested Jedi assistance. Of course, it would have been too dangerous to send someone solo on this one, seeing as even a top agent was MIA. And so, Adar was not alone on this one.

"I always said that the Corellian curiosity would be our doom. Even now as a Jedi I can't fully control my "Corellian wanderlust"." He made sure that no one was around before saying the word "Jedi". He never wanted to draw attention to himself. Lot of people aside the Empire and the Sith disliked or mistrusted the Jedi. That is why he made his cloak somewhat unorthodox for a Jedi. In order to blend in. Though, of course the question was how many people wore cloaks. But that was the least of his worries.

Adar and a Ranger were in a rented room in one of Correllia's sectors. It had only been a day since their presence was requested, so they hoped that nothing bad would have happened. Adar was the one that begun the debrief.

"So, I think it is safe to assume that a group is behind all this. No way one person could be responsible for all these missing people." he was addresing the Captain standing in the room with him. "And the fact that the GA agent went MIA might mean these guys are serious."
He checked his datapad for any new updates, and then pulled up the GA situation log.

"We have a dozen people missing. Some civilians, some security. Where do we start?"

Corellia, a system of unique planets artificially placed here untold ages ago. A fact most in the galaxy would not know, and with the destruction of the Center point station super weapon, a fact that had no more bearing on most of the sentients of the galaxy. Today it just remained as one of the most productive ship yards of the galaxy. Sure not as big as the Kuat Shipyards but still made some of the most recognized vessels used to date. And now thanks to the efforts of the once Rebel leader now Alliance governor Culvin Vellar, the planet had become a powerful world for the Galactic Alliance. With the combined efforts of the GAs Nostromo Fleet and Corellian’s own CorSec the worlds of the Corellian sector were kept safe and sound.

The Ranger Captain hadn’t been on Corellian in a long time, probably before the Jedi he was with was even born. The Ranger listened quietly as the Padawan reminisced about his home world meanwhile he himself looked over some of the reports. The Silver Mynocks had split up into teams and went to each world in the Corellian system, they’d arrived in an unmarked Mobquet Transport so they wouldn’t drawn any attention, after all the rangers weren’t just the Jedi’s soldiers, they were also their scouts and spies as well.

The Ranger turned to face the Padawan as he began to actually discuss the operation at hand. “CorSec’s report has already ruled out most of the major crime syndicates that usually operate out of this sector, something about not wanting to mess with the status quo.” A gravelly voice responded, while his clawed hands activated a holotable in the room. An image of the city flickered to life and a red dot flashed in the industrial sector. “You are most correct, who ever is behind this is well trained and probably well equipped. The agents last report came from here so I think that’s our best place to start. You grew up here, you have any old friends? Contacts?”

Asteroid base Mertaal's Tooth, a Blue Star Cresh-class facility
Behind the dark side of the First Corellian Moon
Corellia system, Corellian sector

There was such a thing as hiding in plain site, an art which the Blue Star Pirates excelled in bar none. Their Cresh-class facilities were inconspicuously littered across the Core Worlds. Temporary and mobile, they served as effective bases of operations for pirate interference in parts that were too far off the more common trade routes for the Blue Stars to otherwise access. A Blue Star ship captain the likes of Lady Ashara Rys would memorize the location of such a facility directly, thus bypassing the need for encryption or other advanced security, for any kind of advanced security was unnecessary for such a disposable facility.

The reason the Blue Star Captain had chosen to break off from Aurek Fleet's present highly-classified movements across the Celanon Spur and take a detour down Namadii Corridor onto the Corellian Run and ultimately here was quite simple. As the fearsome Admiral Brakken had so eloquently put it, even the wrong Gungan getting indigestion and farting at an inopportune moment (or he used the word Sith, sometimes, and Ashara mused that there wasn't much of a difference between the two other than the level of bloodlust) could be disastrous for the tremendous operation that the Pirate Council had set in motion. At this delicate time, the disappearance of multiple Alliance intelligence officers (at least one of whom was also, unwittingly and unintentionally, a BSP agent through a proxy) in the Corellian sector was something that showed up as blips on the Pirate Council's radar and kept Admiral Brakken up for a few hours at night. The disappearance, however, of a single 'top agent', was something that simply could not be ignored.

"So let me get this straight," the Togruta captain narrowed her blue eyes as her sharp mind enumerated all the details told to her by the Nautolan Chief of Operations in front of her whose name she had already forgotten. "These disappearances have all occurred within a couple hundred picoparsecs of a listening post, and none of those laserbrains running the Rebs have even noticed?"

"Actually," Annan muttered from behind, grey-green irises narrowing as his acute, Force-strengthened Firrerreo senses picked up a few noteworthy presences in the system. One of them definitely trained in the Force, if inexperienced, stood out. In the Ashla he or she shone like a beacon. "I rather think they have."

Ashara gave the Jedi a sideways glance, and the rest of her contingent: her Eirrauc first mate named Shoroc and her Hysalrian navigations officer named Basi'li Kromo who barely fit into the room they were in and only did so because his serpentine body could contort easily, also glanced with similar suspicious gazes. Despite the fact the Blue Stars' newest Jedi Associate had been with their crew for some time now, pirates as a whole were still wholly suspicious of 'space wizards'. Nevertheless the Captain smirked. Being Force-sensitive, although untrained, herself, she understood what the Jedi was implying.

"Well, then," Ashara spoke up after a while, holstering the blaster she had been twirling nonchalantly all this while and standing up from her perch. "This stinks way too much for the Impies. It's not us. So I guess it's safe to say that this has 'Bloodthirsty Gungans' written all over it," she glanced at Annan, catching the nonchalance in his eyes changing into steel suddenly, and then shrugged. "Especially if the Rebs are already looking in. If not a tactical threat to our overarching objective, at the very least, this could lead to a skirmish that could provide a decent loot."

"And are we sure he won't mess things up for us?" Shoroc the Eirrauc spoke disdainfully, referring to Annan.

Annan's eyes narrowed at that, though he said nothing, merely sniffing the air and augmenting his olfactory sense through the Force to keep track of the slowly proceeding Force signature. The Captain sighed and sauntered out of the private conference room, her three crewmen trailing behind. A few standard minutes later a small, unremarkable pod with fully updated clearance codes launched out of Mertaal's Tooth planetward.

It would not be inaccurate to say that the Chief was under-armed this time around compared to her usual kit. On the frontline of a pitched battle, it was all heavy plasteel and blaster rifles; now, however, it was anything she could fit on her person or in a pack. Her blaster pistol under her jacket, concealed perfectly. A vibroknife across her lower back, fastened to her belt, just next to a personal shield generator. It was almost like charging into war naked, but hey, that was its own thrill.

“Then we come back here and wait for more orders,” the Zabrak explained. She then turned with a more genuine look to her inquisitive companion. “However, I just happen to know that this pipeline supplies most of the industrial fuel to the factories on this world. Nobody likes it when their factories run out of fuel.”

She slid on her pack with some more essentials like a change of clothes, a few credit chips, and some food if they get stuck hiding out somewhere, stuffed away inside. She pulled her scarf closer around her neck and cleared her throat, before stepping to the door. “One more thing, if anyone asks, we work on the pipeline. The specifics are up to you, but stay consistent,” Emic explained to her comrade. Emic rarely did this kind of thing, but she had done it, and remembered her experience. “Intel has a friend we’re going to meet first.”

The Iridonian took in all the grand sights of this polluted deathfield. Smog and rust and poverty, as far as the eye could see. She wondered how anyone could bear to live like this, but some would say the exact same thing about how she grew up. The streets of Corellia were wide and busy with speeder traffic, going to and from boring old jobs. Nothing like the idyllic slaughterfest back home in Malidris.

They were heading for a meeting in an unassuming hostel room. A slicer that could get them false credentials to get on the pipeline work crew. She was certain there would be a drawback. There always is. It would not stop them though; after all, they only needed a few hours.

Emic spoke again to the Sith. “Ever been to Corellia?”

Hearing Varn ask him about old friends or contacts here in Corellia, Adar was shaken at first. He... didn't have the most social life in his younger years. Only the last 3 years had he come out of his shell. Not to say that he had no friends, but what would a few poor twenty year olds know about these disappearances? Not to mention that they didn't take it well on him leaving for Naboo with his father. They thought he was abandoning them to find riches on the prosperous planet. Which was not incorrect, but it was not the reason for his departure. But as much he wanted to explain it, he knew that they would never understand. Still, he wondered what some of them might be up to these days...

Recovering from his embarrassment and shock, he turn to face Varn. "I... I was born here but left for Naboo about 10 years ago. Didn't really make any permanent relations." he begun to walk around in the room, trying to think of something else. A private investigator would be costly and cannot be trusted with GA intelligence secrets. Turning to local authorities is not much better, and going to the criminal underground isn't something Adar wants to resort to. The young man stopped moving around nervously, and looked to the Force for guidance. Perhaps there was someone he overlooked. He focused, and tried to think about his past.

It was then that he remembered something. Or rather, someone. Perhaps the only one who would know anything of value regarding the missing people.

"Actually, I think I know where to start. An old friend of my father, a man named Relon Dester. He was the regional manager of the biggest factory in Corellia. He might still be there, and he is... well he likes to gather information. "The world of business is a warzone" he used to say."

Honestly, Adar didn't think he would know anything, or even care enough to help them. But it was better than running around blind. Especially since the group was probably still active. If they wasted their time, other people might get hurt, or worse.

The large Dashade looked at the young Padawan, it was a bit disappointing to find that Adar didn’t have any old contacts but it wasn’t a real setback. Varn continued to read through the Corsec reports while his ally sat in thought. His coal like eyes looked up when Adar began to speak again.

“I have met many like the man you speak of,” Varns deep gravelly voice replied. “Such an individual could help get us moving in a more direct path.”

The alien rose up to his full height and stepped across the room to his gear. He slid his old merc gauntlets on over his clawed hands. Since they were trying to keep a low profile the Dashade had opted to wear his old merc armor from the days before joining the Rangers. “Let us go meet this individual, if at the very least it gets us out of this apartment then it’s a step in the right direction.” Varn motioned for Padawan Bolner to lead the way.
