A Swell of Cinders (Kress, Fett)

Post by Professor Mors » Sat Jan 08, 2022 8:25 pm

***Varonat, Anoat Sector, Grid Coordinates K-18***

***The Great Jungle, Northern Expanse***

Despite the sedentary attitudes of the locals, it was neither difficult nor taxing to land on Varonat unmolested. The world was not without its pirates and low-lifes, but there was little to steal in this quadrant of the Greater Javin. Unfortunately for Sa’ato, that also meant his usual sources for information were greatly limited. Even with Kressara’s enthusiastic social interventions, the pacifistic Morodin had not even a morsel of intel to offer. In fairness, the professor didn’t blame them: one typically tries to avoid the monsters from stories whose sole purpose is to inspire fear in children. The Dark Side duo, in turn, did not have that luxury.

Thankfully for the both of them however, a pod of Krish hunters had arrived at the very tavern the Neti was in the process of probing. The professor immediately singled out the wizened elder of the bunch, but knew he would not be reached without significant schmoozing. Still, the Krish were nothing if not easily entertained. After two dozen contests of strength, wit, and alcoholic endurance, the Neti and his associate succeeded in placating each and every one of the youths, before finally gaining access to their learned senior. And, much to the satisfaction of the academic's hypothesis, the oldest of the stone-faced bipeds did indeed have something to offer.

The hunting band had once visited a patch of particularly dense and inhospitable jungle in the north: once, and only once. They had lost half their number to the terror their encountered there, and so horrific was the fullness of their slaughter that the old man could not bring himself to go into great detail. Sa’ato did not press him for such. The two now had their coordinates, and their next destination. After two days of hiking, the Neti walked quite literally into the hallmarks of humanoid craftsmanship, and a short time later, the obscured sheen of a large metal door glinted in the distance.

Glancing at the blond firebrand in his company, the professor offered a rare, earnest shrug, and began to coil his sinuous digits into a tightly-balled fist. Releasing a harsh puff of oxygen, Sa’ato called on the Force to empower his upper body, and heaved his arm straight ahead. Proceeding to “knock” thrice as loudly as possible, the Neti dented the sealed door with each harsh impact, and then listened to droning echoes that followed. The incumbent Dark Lord had shown his affection for violent, direct action. The professor, in contrast, required the aid of someone with more situational tact: a living legend, and one that was known for their flexible perspective.

So far as Sa’ato could tell, this hidden Sith was motivated by neither wealth nor power, or even the allure of forbidden knowledge. But, the documents of his exploits that survived assured the academic that his query was not devoid of motivation, or opposed to negotiation. And thus the retired teacher and his part-time pupil had descended on this insufferable swamp to field a discussion. They meant to propose a campaign that, with this individual’s contribution, was certain to bear ripe fruits. Now, all that remained was to survive that crucial, first encounter. Survive, and barter like no tomorrow…

Yet another mission alongside the scholar! Kress never fancied herself a particularly avid learner, but something about the Neti’s methods always managed to sink in. Plus, sometimes Professor Mors had need of her peculiar skill sets! Just so happens getting plastered for the cause was one of those skills. She matched the young hunters drink for drink, bottle for bottle, consuming far more than she was used to of late. The night didn’t end until Kressara and one of the hunters danced on (and fell off of) a table at the behest of the others. By the time Sa’ato fished out their next destination, his inebriated part-time student was playing slaps (that hand game where you try to slap the other player’s hands before they can pull away) with an equally drunk patron at the bar. Not a single living thing escaped the flirtatious, brazen attention of a fully marinated sith assassin, daring to bat her lashes a few times up at the professor who no doubt struggled to remove her from the fun...before puking up a fistfull of crackernuts on the ground outside.

The regret was nearly instantaneous and lingered in the form of a massive hangover for the greater half of their hike in the following days.

Treading up a mossy, slippery, knoll, a dehydrated groan rattled the blonde’s vocal chords. “...I feel like my brain is made of swamp scum.” She stumbled over a downed branch that crumbled from moisture rot beneath her durasteel clawed boot. It went without saying that she hated drinking for intel. Kress always forgot why she was drinking, drank more knowing the reason for her drunken antics was important, and usually hurt herself in some foolish fashion. Nothing like her usual depressive binging.

A great metal door shone through the hanging moss, leaves, and lichen, drawing the wandering pair near. Sa’ato had the courtesy to knock where as Kressara began sizing up the place immediately. Tired eyes scanned the area for structural weak points, entry, vents, windows, you name it, when curious hazels caught sight of something partially obscured by a curtain of draping overgrowth. She strolled away from her door denting dendroid companion while unlatching one of her wire spool rings which connected to battery packs beneath her bracers, fully prepared to short out the panel. Much to her surprise no locks prohibited her use of the controls...which smelled about as fishy as the bog surrounding them.

Fingers fiddled with her wired apparatus and preemptively latched one of the garotts to the grapple attachment she kept on her utility belt. When her finger pressed the keys and a metallic creak and moan followed the sudden ring of latches snapping free, Kressara’s languid expression turned hawk-like and her liquor sick body reacted. Her arm swung towards Sa’ato. With a flick of her wrist the grapple was released, tearing through humid air to wrap around the woody waist of the Neti thrice over, then pulling the line back with a desperate full body jerk. Kress, small but mighty as any, managed to pull the professor out of harm’s way just as the monolithic slab of metal came crashing down to the bayou floor.

Wind off the clash between portcullis and earth caught her hair, eyes squinting against the updraft of small debris.

Seeing he was safe, Kress pulled her grapple free from the Neti’s torso and retracted the wires. Though sharp enough to slice through soft flesh, her companion would likely experience nothing more than damage to non-reinforced clothing thanks to his tougher skin. The black bird offered up a disarming smile.

“Usually trees fall on houses...not the other way around. You good, Professor? I didn’t pull you too hard did I?”

A drug junkie Kressara Thryn may be, but a slacker she was not.
It took a great deal of physical strength to yank a Neti off their feet.
Strength that the little dealer earned through rigorous training.

“Looks like our friend isn’t too keen on visitors. Either that or he takes the phrase ‘don’t let the door get you on the way out’ very seriously. I gather this is going to get interesting. What do you think, teach?” Kressara admittedly knew very little about their query, but when Sa’ato put out the call for aid She dropped everything and came running. She owed him that much. If this mysterious sith in hiding was of interest to the professor, then they were of interest to Kressara. Sa’ato could be trusted to avoid the common, stereotypical darksiders who dragged down the vibe just with their presence. Maybe this person was worth exploring, if not for their talents, for a refreshing set of motives that were easier to bargain with.

In theory, Sa’ato did not much enjoy being figuratively felled like a young sapling, or else being literally tugged about at another’s whims. In practice however, getting flattened by a hunk of metal, with the potential for serious injury, was surely the greater of two evils. So it was that the Neti scowled in contempt, but shook his head to dissuade any worry on Kressara’s part. “I believe you are correct”, the professor admitted freely as he rose back onto his feet, “If our query is as powerful as hearsay claims, they will not be disturbed lightly”. And, the academic reflected, they must possess terrific conviction to lay dormant in this place for so long.

Without a further moment of hesitation, the professor unclasped his lightsaber from his belt, and quickly brought its orange blade crackling to life. Makeshift torch in hand, Sa’ato nodded with encouragement at his corvid companion, and strode forth into the darkness ahead. Extending a wizened hand before him as he walked down one long corridor, the academic sought to unleash his senses along the interior, and was understandably surprised when his probes could only perceive the immediate thirty-odd feet ahead. There was, undoubtedly, a strong aura about the place. Not only a presence in the Force, but a convocation of several energies all in contest with one another.

The single tunnel forked, and forked again, and again. The duo then passed by several dizzying staircases that wound up and down. At that point, the labyrinthine nature of their situation became clear. They would be here a while- far longer than desired if they weren’t careful. Following a strange trail of particles, Sa’ato grimaced as the pair arrived at what appeared to be a large torture chamber. Though he could not smell it, the professor did not fail to identify the tell-tale chemicals of rot. Thankfully, little more was visible than bones, though clumps of since-disintegrated, burnt, or melted flesh littered the floor and the various abandoned rigs of torment.

The wandering acolytes continued. As they stumbled onto the next large antechamber, the professor needed no olfactory assistance to put two and two together. A laboratory: crude but easily recognized. Distinct, however, in the mixture of mystical objects and Sith texts strewn across table tops, and a host of sinister creatures of all sizes trapped in vats of preservative liquid. For both their sakes, Sa’ato took great care to avoid any electrical terminals, or any devices that might be inclined to rouse the various abominations if they yet lived. Minutes passed, and then hours. Knowing his companion required more rest than he, the Neti finally opted for a break at the foot of a worn statue.

With little else to do but wait, the Neti took to analyzing the crumbling bust. Time, moisture, and fungus had taken their toll, but the academic could easily denote the hallmarks of a humanoid figure. Female, he further deduced amidst his musings. Something about it struck the veteran teacher as familiar. Sadly, the degree of degradation thwarted his attempts to recall exactly who or what he was dealing with. Likewise, the insatiable scholar could not truly devote his full attention. For some time now, he had sensed some manner of thing lurking in the shadows just beyond his mental reach.

The identity of the creature remained cloaked in uncertainty. All that the professor could say for sure is that whatever it was, it did not match the alleged power of their host. When the aberration felt bold enough to cross the boundary of Sa’ato’s thoughts, he was further befuddled by the frailty of their signature in the Force. Was this elusive thing alive in the traditional sense? Some biochemical thrall? There were too many questions, and for now, too few answers. “Let us ascend here, and see what awaits us”, the professor whispered to Kressara at last, cautioning, “But be mindful of your surroundings. We are not so alone as I originally thought”...

Sa’ato was nearly as disgruntled by the trap door as Kressara was thrilled by it. If that was the entrance then surely the interior had to be well worth the exploration. What kind of crazy funhouse lay in store for the intruding pair? Smirking to herself, the sith rogue slipped off her clawed boot attachments for more silent footfalls and motioned to the passage.

“After you then, my friend.”

But wow, did that place have a certain vibe to it that just spoke to the whimsy in her. On the tips of her toes and eyeballing everything the limited light allowed, Kressara followed after the professor’s splashing footsteps into the dark halls of the near chimerical, yet fully realized labyrinthine structure. Fingers on her left hand traced along the damp, mossy wall as she passed along the corridors as quietly as one could through puddles and aging old masonry. The light of his saber reflected against the glitterstim deposits in her eyes, giving the masterless apprentice the look of some predatory creature in the thick shade of the temple, while a fine glimmer covered the girl from the shimmering sweat that escaped her pours. It wasn’t until they reached the out of use torture chamber then did the grin flatten on her face. The stench was god awful, prickling her senses and sweet like rotting cinnamon and rye. Devices scattered about the room had her mind wandering, but thankfully the professor wasn’t too interested in lingering there. The excitement of their breaking and entering returned when the skulking duo moved on, only to stumbled across a laboratory of sorts. Parchment and befuddling, twisted beasts in containment made Kressara’s fingernails itch. The urge to steal from the study was a strong one, but she knew better. They’d be greeting the master of this malefic stone manor before she’d allow herself to decide on whether or not to rob them blind. However, she’d be a fool not to photograph whatever written documents laid strewn about before moving on. While the Neti continued, his sneaky little companion swiveled through the abominable creatures in vats and laid several papers out along the tables for scanning, careful not to lose the sound of Sa’ato’s steps.

“Lorcan? Can you hear me?” She whispered into the device on her wrist while she scanned the final paper. Staticy, but clear enough to make out, a masculine voice answered back, “Not very well. Where are you?”

Kressara sent the files to an unassuming group chat in some old media collective on various ways to prepare and cook Bantha, a little place they used as a less easily traced method of sending downloadable information back and forth without directly linking the sender to the receiver. Once the message was in the clear, Kress removed the scans from her own device and gave a coded command to her second in charge. “Delivery.” After a few seconds, Lorcan responded. “...I don’t know where you’re at, but be safe Kress. I don’t have a good feeling about it.”

“Noted. Don’t worry Lor, I can’t seem to catch up to death. I’ll tell you and the boys all about it when I get back. Keep the place running.” That was the last of their correspondence, allowing Kressara to fully devote her attention to the sinking temple at hand. Her partner was almost out of earshot by the time she finished her snooping, so the sith blackbird cautiously picked up the pace through the twists and turns of the place until she slipped back into line behind the Neti. They yet wandered for a few hours after that until coming to a monumental statue of a lady so worn by time and cloaked in shadow that Kressara couldn’t make out much about the woman either. Tired legs gave willingly from beneath her, dropping the platinum blonde down over the feet of the statue in a controlled fall. Her boots were top notch, made for this very sort of thing, but her body wasn’t as forgiving as it used to be. She relaxed against the big toe of the stone giant and hydrated, managing to snack on some dried fruit and meat for a while longer before the professor’s concern peaked. This stole the moment from Kressara, bringing out the protective nature in her. Sa’ato trusted her to be useful more and more lately, and she couldn’t fathom why. She was an underdog drug addict with a warped sense of accomplishment and more depression than she knew what to do with, but she was clever and fast to bite the hand that beats. That said, whatever was creeping in the edges of the Neti’s senses, while undetectable to the force-deafened apprentice, would not draw near the academic without first meeting the vicious retort of his accomplice.

“Right...You keep your eyes peeled on the path ahead. I’ll cover our backs. Whatever’s out there isn’t getting the drop on us.” Her voice was lowered so that just their immediate vicinity held the soft tone of her tongue. Kress stood and pulled a syringe loaded with shimmering silver liquid from one of her bodysuit pockets, advising the professor to look away before shooting the substance directly into her bloodstream via the crook of her arm. It was a nasty business, but glitterstim surged through her veins like cold water and woke up every nerve ending. Her usually strained connection to the force opened wide and the aberration in question flitted in and out of the edges of her perception before becoming even clearer. It was sickly in nature, yet deathless. Huh, Kress could identify. Yet, unlike her vivacious aura of an almost golden warmth, this unknown variable was far less lustrous. It made her want to grind her teeth and walk with her knives out. In fact, why not?

As the pair continued their journey into the palace, Kressara unlatched every one of the tiny mechanisms on her durasteel wire wrapped rings, connecting the slim metallic apparatuses on her hands to the battery packs hidden beneath her bracers and latching one of the strands to a dagger she kept turned backwards in her grip. She was ready to send electric tendrils with barbed, weighted ends flying in any direction, a vibro dagger fully charged with lethal electricity in hand. One hand to catch, the other to fry the poor thing alive if it got too close.

It did the trick in place of a saber, seeing as Kressara never completed much of her training under her former master. She had to find other ways to be a threat, which coincidentally made her unorthodoxly handy outside of the usual sith slash and dash methods.

“Any clue where we’re going?” Illuminated mirrors of glimmer and hazel scoured the walls...were faces peering at them? Silvery blonde brows turned down over her painted lashes and a sneer twisted her passive smile.

“No”, Sa’ato confessed flatly as he started up the stairwell, “We are, as you humans are so fond of saying, ‘winging it’. Although-”. The Neti paused as he glanced up the winding, dimly-lit stairwell, “I can’t think of many legends that would keep an audience chamber on the ground floor”. With that, the pair ascended. Eventually, the drab, dark interior gave way to luminous wall fixtures, some natural, some artificial. Either were inscrutable in make and model, but at times they almost seemed to mimic real windows. At times, the overpowering light was enough to stigmy even Sa’ato’s senses. This was no gentle sun, but the burning, penetrating rays of a supernova.

And it was then, amidst the scalding glare, that the faint rattle of metal rang out, and the frenzied scratching of what the professor took to be claws. Without hesitating, he turned about. Some meters back, through the manufactured plumes of light, he was certain he had caught sight of a hunched-over frame. Was it a quadruped, a stooped-over humanoid? The academic could not be sure, for as quickly as it made itself known, it vanished once more into the unsettling white. The mystery deepened, as did the retired teacher’s frustration. Something, he was convinced, their unseen host would definitely sense.

Doing his best to refocus his mind, the Neti shook his head, and continued on. Selecting the first open door that he could find, the professor stepped over a noisy threshold into what he immediately deduced to be a kitchen. Though he half-expected the smell of rot and disuse, the space was surprisingly benign. Apart from the occasional, aged, bloodstain, the chromium counters and cooktops appeared well-maintained, while a large system of circulation fans droned sleepily overhead. Fiddling with a nearby refrigeration unit, the professor narrowly spotted the tell-tale signs of a tunnel delivery system, though he dare not venture into such confined nooks and crannies.

Not wishing to tarry any longer, Sa’ato led his young charge trailing behind as he navigated a series of modest servants’ corridors, until quite unexpectedly, the duo found themselves in the middle of an art gallery. Sculpture, tapestry, oils, charcoals, holodisplays, the vaulted ceilings were nearly packed to the fullest. Whether they were originals, commissions, or otherwise was unclear. However, what was obvious were a series of vandalistic marks and damages that no onlooker could ignore. Thankfully, or perhaps, forebodingly, there was no obvious shrine or statue in the likeness of the citadel’s owner.

Taking an exit on the left, time slowly compressed as the Neti and his accomplice passed through other various menageries: an aquarium, a taxidermy hall, and something that Sa’ato could only half-guest was some sort of amusement ride, partially gutted of its machinery. After some additional wandering, the professor paused within a large, violet chamber. Everything within seemed embroidered- a bedroom? The academic shrugged his shoulders with silent discomfort having located a further clue. Whips, bindings, and all sorts of instruments were lined in cases and on arrayed on small tables. Beyond that lay various bottles, re-breathers, and a handful of censers, still releasing chromatic wisps of smoke.

“Try not to inhale”, the Neti finally cautioned in a low voice, not wishing to go into detail, “We’d best move on”.

“Ah. I see. So this is all improvational? Good.” Kressara kept her eyes on the path behind them, weapons at the ready as she followed in the steps of the Neti. They climbed a staircase into the higher levels of the facility to discover a vastly different world from the dingy, wet basement they’d been exploring previously. Light fixtures like large windows flooded the halls in white light, glaring off of the glimmer in Kressara’s irises like little solar flares of prismatic fire in the glitbiter’s vision. It painted the place in multifoliate arcs for her eyes alone, a veritable masterpiece of every color known to sentient life refracting with every twist and turn.

“This place would be a blast to roam through while totally tripping balls, just saying.” It wasn’t like the professor could see it in the same light, literally, but the sentiment was share worthy to Kressara none the less.

Claws scittered over the floor and an indeterminable being dashed between their sightlines, blurred by the shimmering for the rogue apprentice at Sa’ato’s back. She too was unable to identify the threat, something that rose a viciousness within her. Glitterstim deposit coated teeth glinted in the light with the pulling of her lips into a dangerous smile. Whatever was toying with them grew bolder by the minute. Together the intruding pair retreated into a kitchen, then an art gallery which garnered the crow’s attention. It appeared to be vandalized, and yet the addition of score marks against the collection seemed to complete it. Further they wandered, happening across a bedroom of sorts. The familiar waft of airborne aphrodesiacs prickled the anatomically prone sith’s senses, eyes dropping to the various cases and displays of their host’s...hobbies.

Kressara stopped mid stride and raised her hands in a mock show of surprise.

“Oh-ho-ho, Professor! Why is it you’re looking for this sith lord again? I’m starting to think this doesn’t have anything to do with Mustafar at all.” The cheeky ashen sith approached one of the glass cabinets and pointed down at one of the objects, smirking something awful. “I mean for real, did you see the size of this one? I can’t even tell what species this thing was made for…”

Noticing the professor’s obvious discomfort, Kress dropped the subject and stepped away from the display, eyeballing one of the medicated foggers with a lifting of her left brow.

“Ugh, please. Someone needs to introduce these people to a decent plug. This stuff is a mild sedative at best. In the air like this? It’d take a hot minute before you’d start feeling good. I recognize the smell...don’t ask why.” On the way out the chamber, the black bird snatched up one of the censers, plugged one side of her nose with her knuckle, and jammed the nozzle up the other side for a concentrated breath of the dizzying substance. Shimmering hazels rolled back into her skull, staggering the glitbiter for a moment before releasing a plume of fog through her slightly gaped mouth. Warm fuzzy bubbles grew in her blood, softening her joints, easing some of her chronic aches, and tickling her mind. The room grew heavy, then gravity let up just a bit and she felt it all become weightless. Kressara exhaled the rest of the vapors with a purr and switched off the censer before slipping it into a coat pocket. The junkie sith straightened up like she hadn’t just ingested a high enough dose of narcotic aphrodisiacs to knock out a grown male hutt, or at worst turn him on.

Or at best?

Depending on what their host was into.

Letting all those tense muscles relax and cranking her shoulders to release the knots, the professor’s addict partner stepped out of the room with a languid stride, glazed eyes quickly losing evidence of her buzz. The feeling never stayed long enough for Kress.

“Pretty weak stuff. You do look nice today though, Sa’ato. That shade of bark really compliments your jawline.”

Of course she was just playing with him, wasn’t she? Probably. Hopefully. The duo roamed further and Kressara caught herself giggling at some of the more tasteful artwork that they passed, twirling her knife between her fingers with a significant rise in chaotic, friendly, unnaturally warm energy coming from her being.

"Are we there yet?"

“As I’ve said before”, Sa’ato began as he hastily rounded another corner with the bubbly humanoid, “Our target is nestled deep within Alliance Space. We cannot win the battle with so many ships or weapons. We need a local, human element- if the stories of this man are true, he’ll help us get one”. The professor sighed and shook his head in light of Kress’s further teasing. Thank goodness the aphrodisiacs were mostly tame, the academic truly had no idea how he might peel off the buxom blonde if they were affected to the utmost. “With regards to how close we are”, the Neti continued, “I don’t see you offering any su-”.

The retired teacher stopped short. At that very moment, he did feel something, a powerful something. Having wandered the paths of cruelty and decadents for what felt like half a day, a surge of energy in the Force burned across the professor’s senses. Like a flash of lightning, its point of origin, or rather, detonation, was perfectly clear. “This way”, Sa’ato growled in a hushed whisper, his pace quickening as he took long, purposeful strides towards the center of the maze. Eventually, the pair came to the largest set of doors they’d seen yet. Cast in some dark onyx alloy, etchings of bloodshed and depravity wove a complex tale across their surface.

The Neti barely had to brush his fingers across the fine paneling before the artistic entrance swung open effortlessly. Amaurotine lights blinked weakly into existence, two by two, lining a path to an inscrutable mound at the far end of a wide chamber. A throne, the lecturer hazarded to guess. Carefully, Sa’ato crept toward the raised dais, stopping ten meters away, and calling out through the darkness with a reserved tone, “We have come to call on the master of this keep, if they will make themselves known to us…”

Poor Sa’ato. He was growing ever more perturbed by the antics of his chosen companion. Kressara knew she could be a bit much, especially where substance was involved, but she also suspected the professor of secretly, if only a little, enjoying her less refined qualities. Sure she acted like a fool half the time, but he knew she had more brains on the inside than most ever saw. Still, her Neti guide wasn’t having it with her whimsy when he went to chide her, but instead both teacher and assassin stopped mid stride, forgetting their conversations. Kress was no stranger to the auras of masters. They were like expensive perfume in a room of cheap scents. Thick, heavy, fine, and enviable. At least enviable to most. The flaxen killer prefered her smaller, less noticeable presence without the need of masking herself. Force wielders loved to miscalculate a person’s danger by the strength of their connection to the force. They often forget that a well placed knife to the spinal column would drop a man just as fast. Oh, how they loved to take on the weaker, bright eyed young force adepts as their personal projects too. The Professor for example. While Kressara would never purposefully harm so much as a splinter of him, the level of trust he put in her would allow for it.

But her internal musings would have to wait. Together, journeying forward into grand features of the keep, the pair found its black heart. A throne room, of course. What sith lord didn’t have a throne? Even one as interesting as the host they came to call on fell prey to such stereotyping. A sharp grin cut across her features when doors opened, revealing the master’s dark rest. In the shadow of the Neti, his small blonde companion followed before stepping out at the end of their walk. Glitterstim hazels glowed in the low, flickering light, aimed at the eyes of their shadow shrouded host. Crooking her smile, a glitter coated tongue formed the words, “Unless we’re just talking to a pile of something on a throne that happens to look like a person in this lighting.”

Unclasping a small sphere from her belt, Kress flicked the harmless orb to light and rolled it over the floor towards the shadows, grinning with wicked anticipation as she curbed the motion into a sweeping bow. She remained bowed, head tilted upwards, eyes on the prize, waiting for the light to reach the source of their interest. Yet, her hand covering her heart in ceremonial fashion was conveniently placed next to a small concealed blade along the outer lining of her coat.

The obsidian air was unnervingly stale and robust, immune to the assassin’s attempts to tame and define it. For light by its very nature sought to tame and define darkness in all its forms, to cull each possibility contained within and impose the certainty of what was.

There was a tangible disconnect between the world they were perceiving and the same space, across this divide. Still, some impressions made it through the otherworldly veil.
A faint halo adorning a crown. The figure-
It.
It was backlit from some unseen, ghostly source, the shine creating a thin rim around its edges.

A muffled string of bilious tones uneasily faded on the shockingly sere draft. There was an implied cadence to the space where words were meant to be, a highly improvisational but technically precise melody and internal rhyme, as if orchestrated by a prolific jizz player. Or the hypnotic oration of an authoritarian whipping support for some coming atrocity. An academic may have surmised via the implied septameter this was ancient sith favored in the spells of priests on Khar Shian. But before any such musing could be rationalized and dismissed, it ended completely.

The Neti’s plea echoed in the hall at his back, but was absorbed and snuffed out in the middleground. Yet, the spectre that hovered above the throne stiffened and stretched its crowned brow up and back, as a trained kath hound assessing its next meal by auditory and olfactory input and a predator’s primeval instinct.

They must have felt it. The eruption of nerves in one’s spine. The redistribution of sap in the other. Fight. Flight. Flee. They may not have been lightweights but there was no denying it. The force itself would have warned them the face they would soon unveil was the very same that hundreds of thousands had fallen victim to.

The air itself shifted. A gust swept Kressara’s orb, driving it end over end deeper toward the abyss which stared back into them. The very same gust tugged on the pair’s legs, beckoning them hither.

The creature. The hazy demon king upon its throne lurched and ploddingly pivoted its entire form toward them, through the black. In that moment its eyes appeared to produce their own luminescence, cutting to their souls and taking root there.

Kressara’s orb smacked against something physical. A barrier between them and the one that now perceived them.

The storied and statuesque Sith Lord atop the throne before them erected itself, seemingly feeding its lower torso into the near obsidian foreground of the shadowed stone below.

As it angled itself toward them, a new luminescence danced upon its dire countenance, giving little more than the remotest glimpse of its true form.

The keep’s air pressure shifted and a new gust joined in the other. Kressara’s orb flailed against the object preventing its passage.

A grave groan gave way to clangs and a sudden shredding that whipped across the entire room.

Instantly the black curtain that had separated them from the creature upon the throne was gone and a flood of unnatural, scintillant light assaulted them.

As their eyes adjusted, the room was now filled with figures previously behind cover. There was a sense of interrupted bustle and general bedeviled resentment to their collective vibe.

The crowned and throned Lord had not budged since locking his troubled gaze on them.
His palm clutched a holocron which sputtered and flared, dancing with wisps and embers. The device was still recording, although he had not uttered a word since trailing off upon the visiting pair’s self-heralded arrival to the court had interrupted his performance.

His uncanny, alien gaze locked somewhere on the unseen horizon beyond the intruders. Now with his monolithic but twisted visage facing them and the sparks of the holocron just under his red forked jowl, it would have been clear the confusion was not one sided.

And in the event not everyone was an academic, it was now clear that the man on the throne was significantly less human than had been expected, and in fact had the same face, armor full with an ancient eye, robes, and headdress seen on two woven murals and a stone statue towering behind him, frozen in a moment of glorious wrath.

His name and sigil were unmistakably etched into each piece.

They were the markings of the Dark Lord of the Sith:

Naga Sadow.

His withered lips curled as if to say, "...?"

Sa’ato reciprocated the lip motion of the near-mummified Darksider’s with one of his own: mainly, dropping his jaw as far as it would fall. Granted, the Neti’s helm did well to disguise the involuntary movement, but his shock and surprise were surely felt through the Force. It simply was not possible. The long-since succeeded Lord of Yavin had to have died centuries, if not millennia ago! And yet, there was no obvious hint of deception, so far as the professor could tell with his senses metaphysical and otherwise. Still, real or no, what was to be done? On the one hand, the academic wasn’t about to commit himself and his unlikely pupil to a full-fledged battle.

At the same time, the retired lecturer needed data if he was going to reach any sort of conclusion. Without bothering to stop and explain matters to the blonde corvid, or else engage in diplomacy with one of the most prominent figures of Sith history, the Neti settled on a third option. Reaching into one of his many bandolier pouches, Sa’ato retrieved an almost spherical seed pod with a gnarled, nutlike exterior. The Felucian foatl flower, colloquially known in horticulturist circles as the ‘Anzanti Bloom’. Saturating on a long stem, the host plant would launch the seedlings at nearby wildlife, where the buds would break open on impact.

The unfortunate targets of this particular genus would quickly find their nutrients leached by the entrenched seed, until the host organism died and became the foundation for a new foatl plant. So then, if the entity that sat before Sa’ato wasn’t the true Naga Sadow, someone, or something of his age would find themselves quickly innervated by such an experience. And, if this was the genuine article, the Neti hedged his bet that so small and trivial an assault would not garner major ire- at least, not beyond the point of apology and proselytizing. So it was that the Neti took up his makeshift weapon with two fingers.

Sa’ato sinuous digits let slip a sickening crack as he built up tension– and then suddenly released, sending the small, vile seed pod barreling straight toward the wizened chest of the mysterious Darth…
