Outback Trading Co. - Flight 0119 - Blue Star Pirates

Post by Rane DeCola » Sat Jan 05, 2019 2:10 pm

**Outer Rim Territories**
**Western Reaches, Ponemah Terminal**
**Outskirts of Pariah Town**

The sun was hot and reflected off Rane’s glareshades as he stood at the foot of the Destitute Spacer watching numerous crates of what he again assumed to be illicit cargo get loaded on the Action V bulk freighter. Rane was glad that as far as planet-side security, he didn’t need to worry about the likes of any significantly organized or well-sized Imperial or Sith forces. Despite the Imperial station that orbited the planet, Ponemah was the perfect backwater world to stage this type of shipment from, and Rane was glad that he had received word from Captain Molo requesting his services as far as security were concerned once again.

Rane of course had looped in his commander on his request for side-duties outside of those already assigned to him aboard The Wayward. After being passed up the chain of command, word had come back down approving Rane for the trip, along with additional orders to check-in on the Blue Star Pirates’ business interests in Ord Mantell. As preparations continued, Captain Molo made his way down the ramp and approached Rane.

“Everything coming along as planned Mr. DeCola?”

“Yes Captain, we’re good.”

“Excellent. The trip should be straightforward. As for now, I’m just waiting to hear if there are going to be any other vessels joining us at the rendezvous point before we begin our journey up north.”

“I haven’t heard anything back yet on my end Captain.”

“Keep me posted.”

“Aye Captain.”

Rane knew that the call had gone out to any other shippers who wished to send resources north into Imperial territory under the protection of the Blue Star Pirates. In Rane’s mind, the Imperials once again seemed to be tipping the scales in their favor and the illusive pirate band would take on any reasonable risk to undermine their efforts. It was getting close to the time for the convoy to depart though, and he had been concerned that he hadn’t heard back from any other BSP elements. Concerned or not though, he had a job to do and there was plenty of work to be done.

“Anything yet Captain?”

“No, but there’s still time. However, we need to lift off and get out of here.”

“Yeah, the window for making it off system undetected by the Imperial station is tight. The cargo is loaded up and I’ve done all of the pre-flight checks.”

The sun was beginning to set now on Ponemah and as part of the security for this shipment, Rane had used some of the Blue Star Pirates’ contacts to arrange for a window to sneak the Destitute Spacer and its small fighter escort past the Imperial sensor grid. Had the convoy leaving Ponemah been larger, he would have been more concerned, but one ship leaving the planet with an escort wouldn’t draw too much unwanted attention, or so he hoped.

Rane walked up the ramp of the freighter and closed the gangway hatch behind him. From there, he began making his way toward the bridge as he felt the engines of the large transport begin to come to life. By the time he arrived on the bridge, he could already feel the massive repulsorlifts beginning to engage and lift the Destitute Spacer off the ground.

As he entered through the door to the bridge, Captain Molo had given the order to engage the sublight engines and Rane watched the planet begin to quickly drop away from the ship through the freighter’s viewport.

Outback 2 has checked in Captain,” reported one of the bridge crew. Rane was glad to hear that the droid-piloted StarViper that was slaved to controls of the Destitute Spacer was also functioning properly. With that, Captain Molo gave the command to proceed to the rendezvous point, from which the convoy would begin its trip northward long Burke’s Trailing.

"Here's hoping they haven't followed us all the way here," Buggie murmured as he and Storm disengaged the hyperdrive to bring the twin transports of Outland group out of hyperspace over Ponemah.

Two Action V transports snapped back into realspace, just in time to make visual confirmation of another friendly convoy leaving the system. Storm and Buggie, piloting Outland 02, as usual, had escaped an ambush at Seeratter, where they had barely packed up and hit the navigation buoy in time to escape a picket fleet that had evidently been tipped off as to what type of cargo the transports had stored in their holds. The carbon scoring on the hull of the Outland Transport freighters told the entire story; a friendly convoy was a sight for sore eyes for the beleaguered spacers.

"Outland 02 hailing transport Outback 2, this is Captain Buggie speaking," Buggie began, after changing the comm frequency to a tight-wave pattern, "We just had an unfriendly encounter over Seeratter and are requesting permission to join your group traveling up Burke's Trailing."

The convoy only had a light escort, but it would have to be enough. The Outland Transport group were sitting ducks if they ran into any more complications, and the presence of a StarViper might be more than enough to fend off any raiders with bad intentions.

If the rogues and ne'er-do-wells of the Galaxy thought a single attack platform or dogged freighter would impede the Imperial Navy, they were in for a very rude awakening. At the head of his trusted XM-1, the Proudclad, Line Captain Doren Vassyl had sallied forth to police and regulate the Empire's nigh-unceasing borders once more, and was as keen as ever to harry any charlatans that dared cross his path. Joining him in this sacred endeavor was the ever-reliable Orville Patrias of the Marine Corps, who would be supplementing the mission aboard a time-tested ATR-6 transport. While the shuttle's forte was boarding larger, unsuspecting shipping vessels, its onboard scanners allowed it double up as an excellent mobile listening post.

Even now, the pilot and his right hand were hard at work combing through various comm channels, all while continually updating feeds from deep space sensor nodes. At last, the shuttle secondary operator stiffened sternly in his seat, and quickly grasped his superior's attention. Not long after, Doren himself received a brief missive over his missile boat's transponder, [Possible bogeys in the next quadrant: how shall we proceed Sir?]. A chilled grin hardened across Vassyl's face, [Let's go take a look: lock in coordinates and prepare to make the jump to lightspeed]. The Captain did not wait for confirmation before he himself began to spool up the XM-1's own hyperdrive. As soon as the projected route was ready, he would leap ahead of his companions, lest they arrive first only to be caught off-guard.

Captain Molo had been all too happy to have the Outland transports join the convoy as they had started making their way up northward on Burke’s Trailing. As he monitored the convoy’s progress from a console on the bridge that showed their position, he consulted Rane as to the state of the convoy’s security arrangements once they reached their final destination.

“Is everything ready for our arrival?”

“Yes, I’ve arranged for us to land at a private landing pad on Quantxi. We should have no problem unloading the cargo there. As for myself, I’ve got some other business interests in the area, so I’ll sticking around after you complete the off load and get out of the system.”

“Sounds good. It’s been good to have you along again.”

“Always a pleasure Captain.”

“You ever think of going solo Mr. DeCola?”

“Nah, I’ve got myself a good deal worked out. My management is good with the side work as long as it benefits the company and I keep an eye on their interests.”

Captain Molo didn’t push Rane any further on the subject, but was appreciative of the lucrative business relationship that he had built with Rane and his company. It would be several more hours before they made their arrival at their final destination and it looked like it would be another good pay day for the Destitute Spacer and its crew.

The convoy was currently in the process of passing through the Jedha system, the moon of Jedha, or whatever was left of it after the cataclysmic mining disaster, hardly a speck in the distance. Whatever sights there were to be seen had completely passed by the Outland Transport group's organic crew, as Storm and Buggie were preoccupied with making sure that the ambush at Seeratter had not done any permanent damage to the systems on each of the two transports. During the sublight passage through the Jedha system, Buggie had shuttled over to the Outland 01, which, as always, had its navigation computer slaved to the Outland 02 and was fully crewed by pilot droids. The feeling of being on such a large vessel completely devoid of any organic life did leave a somewhat eerie impression upon Buggie, but having lived within the Roche asteroid field, he had grown accustomed to the company of droids. Twitter, his R7-series astromech droid, was like family to him, disregarding for the moment that he had rebuilt the droid, essentially making him its creator in a certain sense.

As steam shot out of a coolant pipe, Buggie popped out of a maintenance hatch wheezing. Any other Verpine might have been able to repair the damage done to the Outland 01 or even improve the functionality of the ship's systems within this much time, and that was no exaggeration. Buggie, on the other hand, had been trained in a different curriculum, having only learned the standard tinkering when he was but a hatchling. Apparently, for this job, space tape wasn't going to do the trick.

Since the Outland 01 was essentially a twin to Outland 02, Buggie raised his comlink to his mandibles and called for Storm, "I'm in maintenance hatch S-12, and there's a coolant pipe turning this corridor into a sauna. Where's the cutoff valve for it?"

"Did you read the manual?" Storm replied back.

Cursing, Buggie rambled off to his toolkit.

The Destitute Spacer and its escort had dropped out of hyperspace near Jedha along with the rest of the convoy due to one of the Outland vessels having a coolant pipe malfunction. Jedha hadn’t been a highly frequented territory following the destruction that had been wreaked by the Empire so many years ago. Captain Molo had radioed over to the Outland group to see if they needed assistance and was assured that repairs were ongoing and that the damaged vessel was in good hands.

The stopover made Rane tense. He had a schedule to meet, as far as the other interests of the Blue Star Pirates were concerned further up Burke’s Trailing, but he wasn’t about to abandon the Outland vessels considering the fact the convoy’s escort was already lean.

“Mr. DeCola, you seem tense. Don’t worry. Mr. Storm confirms that the rest of the convoy should be ready to move along in no time. Besides, if you’ve been around as long I have, you get to know a few shortcuts through the spacelanes. I assure you that our convoy will arrive on time.”

“Thank you Captain. I’ve got important business to attend to at our destination and timing may be critical.”

As Captain Molo had promised, he had made up for lost time by the convoy and the small fleet of transport vessels had arrived at the appointed time in the Bright Jewel Sector and were safely orbiting Ord Mantell.

“Captain, once again, I appreciate your efforts and you have my thanks for asking me along. However, I have other business to attend to and get going at this point. I’ll be taking my StarViper planet-side, but I see that the other transports are already on course for rendezvous with the convoy at this point. You shouldn’t have any problems from here.”

Captain Molo thanked Rane once again as well and extended the option to continue to business together in the future, which Rane would be sure to take Captain Molo up on. For now though, he transferred to his StarViper fighter, and set course for the surface of Ord Mantell.

By the time that the convoy had reached the Bright Jewel system, Buggie had done all he was capable of on the damaged Outland 01. Still onboard the heavy freighter, Buggie was now performing spot-checks of crucial systems, ensuring that none of the ship's systems had suffered damage that was not severe enough to cause danger, but would come back to haunt them later. Having found only two areas in need of minor repair while in transit to Ord Mantell, Buggie then turned his attention to the cargo in the Action V transport's gargantuan hold.

As he was testing that a particular cargo container had been properly tied down by the loader droids, Buggie was hailed over his comlink, "Outland Transport group, this is The Destitute Spacer. We're setting our course for drop-off. Good luck to you out there."

At this point, Outland 01 and Outland 02 would be traveling by themselves down the Celanon Spur, where they'd be delivering their cargo to Station 88 Spaceport and refueling. Now that they were forging ahead without any escort, it was in Buggie and Storm's best interests to depart Ord Mantell before an Imperial patrol decided to pick them up on a random inspection.

Satisfied with the state of the cargo in Outland 01's hold, Buggie headed back to the bridge of the heavy transport, where he and Storm would set their course for Station 88.

Travel along the Celanon Spur, a major trade route, presented few problems to the heavy freighters of Outland Transport. From the Bright Jewel system, they proceeded to the Dohu system, home to the world of Dohu VII, in the far orbit of the system's primary. Since Outland Transport was merely passing through the system, Dohu Space Control, the authority tasked with controlling incoming traffick to Dohu VII, paid them little attention. From Dohu, the convoy traveled further down the Celanon Spur to the Nentan system.

Nentan itself was a barren world, and Outland 01's navigational data relayed that there was very little of interest on the planet, besides a network of ancient ruins from some long-extinct civilization. The next system along the Celanon Spur also resided within the Glythe sector, the same as Nentan. The Ten Tempests system had piqued Buggie's curiosity due to its name. Its planet of interest, Vortex, lived up to its name. Violent winds, weather, and ice caps that formed nearly overnight were characteristics of the blue and purple hued planet that tilted on its axis at an abnormal angle. A pilot could be tested in these environments, and Buggie was glad he wasn't trying to land the unwieldy Outland 01 on Vortex.

The terminus point of the Outland Transport group's journey was Station 88-- a spaceport located within the Vorc sector. The pilots of the transports were relieved as they berthed their heavy transports up against a pair of the station's large docking tubes, where they could offload and load cargo as needed. It wouldn't be long before Storm and Buggie finished their cargo transfer, collected their credits, refueled, and got out of the system. During their journey, the two had already identified a profitable opportunity in the Core. With any luck, they could continue limping along on their repaired vessels and make enough credits on their next job to see to it that the twin Action Vs received a proper repair at a qualified station.
