Unnerving Quiet

***Darkness, 200 Word Requirement***

Silas sat in meditation pondering on the events of his recent battles. It was obvious a shift in mentality would be required. Stealth, an aspect that could supersede combat was an element the Echani seemed built for. As such Silas stilled his mind and relied not on gathering the peak of his might in the Force but mastering his connection to its endless flow. Gathering the small field that he had sought solace in within his senses alongside the small brook and scattered trees that dotted its landscape Silas created an image within his mind. Intentionally training at night there were few sources of ambient light, most generated from artificial means. Each of these luminous bursts stabbed into the darkness, that same void Silas now sought to bend to his will. Clearing his mind of distractions Silas then reached out through the Force to the closest source of light and focused his senses upon the small lantern.

Extending his own influence through the Force, Silas cast a shadow upon the modest ambiance and concealed its light with the Force itself. This cloak was weak and at first Silas was unable to further its reach to the field around him. However, having mastered the ability to call storms Silas soon suspected another path lay open to him. To perceive light as simply another element of the environment that surrounded him regardless of its source Silas began to draw in and diminish a large circumference around him. Soon the fields dimmed as the remaining luminance was slowly quelled. To Silas’s delight he felt a small charge of energy as the light was siphoned from the area. With enough focus the Force manipulated the entire surrounding area into a sphere of supernatural darkness. ‘This seemingly innocuous ability might bear great utility,’ Silas mused as he withdrew the circumference of shadow until it only enveloped his self. As if garbed by the void itself Silas noted the unique nature of the technique. The grounds remained darkened as Silas held the ability, though any artificial lighting recovered as he withdrew his influence. “A necessary step I suppose,” Silas voiced through the void into the empty night.

***Shadow Walk, 800 word Requirement***

Having learned how to manipulate light by siphoning its presence away to create darkness Silas sat in meditation musing over the possibilities it granted him. Long had the adept derided the notion of matter transfer as it pertained to the Force as the only true teleportation ability he recognized was beyond even him, the art was known only to the former emperor. Yet creating wormholes was not within reach without the aid of the previous practitioner’s holocron or similar relic. However, as Silas continued to ponder on this the manner to which Krynn had been capable of employing movement through darkness garnered a hypothesis. ‘Perhaps it is not true teleportation but an advanced form of movement through a spatial manipulation rather than physical enhancement. If that is the case my work toward the mastery of light might yield further gains.’ Clearing his mind of his own questions and guesswork for the time Silas calmly called upon the Force.

Reaching the apex of his connection Silas stood up and readied his self. With careful manipulation Silas absorbed the light that reflected from his own body cloaking his self in shadow (Darkness). In seconds Silas’s visage faded as the visual depth of his body diminished. Once Silas was finished shunting the ambient light’s natural progression his appearance seemed to have lost almost all depth to the point his persona seemed two dimensional. Of course the lighting effect didn’t physically remove Silas’s depth but obfuscated his appearance. Though Silas had employed the technique before never had he used the art with such precision. Of course it was only the necessary stepping stone in order to take the next step to achieve the ability Silas now sought. Backing up to the nearest outer wall of the complex Silas was staying at, the Sovereign then accessed the security camera feeds to confirm the magnitude of the stealth he now possessed.

True to his assumptions Silas’s visage was completely hidden from artificial sight. With Silas’s own keen vision there was a perceptible form not concealed by the shadow the cleft of an adjoining structure offered, a perception the Echani lord had anticipated. ‘Of course the separation between a cloaking art and a movement technique is why I have stalled my actions this day,’ Silas confirmed as he surveyed the shadow that now encompassed his form. Looking to achieve the next step in the learning process Silas focused upon the shadow his visage was encompassed by. If there was a transmutation, a fusion, or merger between the practitioner and shadow it would lie in this next step. Closing his eyes Silas sought to align the center of his being with the flow of the Living Force. Silas could sense that this crucial pivot relied heavily of the aspect of Alteration. While Silas’s body did not physically meld with the absence of light it did in fact phase into the existing shadow with great effort.

Commanding a great degree of control to maintain the visual merger and properly alter the depth of his form to match that of the static darkness. With the obfuscating portion of the art successful Silas studied the results and looked toward the movement within the boundaries of the technique. Opening his eyes Silas surveyed the outer walls and then looked out to the courtyard. ‘To augment my movement speed on top of the precision required already of this art would be untenable as far as stamina consumption goes. Yet, should the pathing take advantage of this imaging technique I may be able to ‘meld’ into the shadows that run along buildings taking advantage of this guise to the greatest degree,’ Silas contemplated for a long breath of time before positioning his self to sprint. After just a few steps however, Silas’s form broke uniformity as it lacked the balance he had guessed was required. Halting his movement Silas placed his left hand on the building an attempted to utilize a mixture of the adherence art with the darkness he had summoned.

Yet just as he had mused with the concept of using augmented speed using even one more ability in conjunction with all the manipulations he had already employed shattered the technique. Undaunted, Silas allowed his progress to halt and focused on the connection between his hand and the wall once more. To fully achieve the final step shadow walk Silas needed to utilize the darkness in aiding his movement not to simply move within the use of the art. Concentrating on the flow of the Force that flowed through and within the building and the subtle changes in its current, Silas reached out and touched upon that tributary. Utilizing the energy that was generated in using the darkness technique converted through the Force Silas was able to grip to the wall. Testing the hold Silas followed up by placing his right foot against the wall and hefting himself up. It was quite crude and slow at first though still completely hidden from sight.

The effort was far too great and the movement too slow and straining as Silas moved hand hold to hand hold as if climbing a Cliffside. Silas fought through the effort and draining demand of his reserves of spiritual energy to slowly refine the ability. In time the movement along the building’s outer wall refined to be almost swift as Silas was able to hold his entire frame by the connection with just a single limb. Dropping back down to his original training area it was time to put each function of the newfound technique into play at once to hone it into a combat ready art. Initially Silas released his hold over the Force in order to relax back to a default state. Centered within the courtyard Silas waived his right arm across his visage as it took the form of shadow. Rapidly Silas shifted the same current that he had used to scale the building and recoiled back toward that same wall. This movement was a smooth glide slightly faster than Silas’s natural running speed.

Far from seamless in transition as Silas had used the two parts of the technique independently the Sovereign still considered it a success. The pace of the glide shifted rapidly once Silas reach a natural shadow as it augmented his progress by allowing him to decrease the demand on his concentration in producing darkness to conceal his path and charge his movement. In an effort to fully refine the art Silas returned a final time to his starting position. This time Silas took more care in the refinement of his pre-movement use of the Force. Gathering a great deal of energy to his right hand Silas also focused a high degree on his feet. The two-pronged channeling placed the technique far from the reach of newly minted acolytes as even the greatest masters at times struggled with the use of more than one manipulation at a time. Honing his focus and clearing his mind Silas began to move his hand and start his glide at the same time. Visually, the Sovereign’s form was swiftly consumed by shadow and carried backward out of sight as Silas glided to the outer wall of the complex. Yet, even as Silas reached the barrier he noted that his being had remained intact albeit concealed from almost any form of detection. Breathing heavily Silas smiled as he noted his accomplishment. ‘Never idle lest one rust away into dust.’
