Inquisitors office: research and development

She stood on a threshold, she was about to create something for the Empire. This was a huge step for her, creating something for a one-time enemy was simply something she just didn't do. However if she was going to make the best of a situation she was going to work within the rules of her station. Kota wanted some guards for the prison she just had built and this was the means to do it.

This was going to be a trial and error build, if it failed they were out time, some resources, if it succeeded she could build a few more. Building droids was very new for Kota, she had never attempted anything like it before and she was already off the books. However the compendium still would inspire her creation, with the help of engineering, research, and hopefully some imperial hands she could create these wardens. Kota would start with the simple first, the creation of the structure. Since it would be based off a simple droid the layout was already there. However it would have to be altered for new proportions, as she wanted to go bigger. This wouldn't be an easy task, but she was confident that it could be done. She would use durasteel mostly, durasteel was used for a lot of things like that of ships. It made it an ideal metal if used correctly, it was resistant to heat and cold; also was good with a lot of stress. Kota could only assume that the droid would be under stress, a giant droid hadn't been made before to her knowledge.

She figured that the durasteel would have to be the thickness of a normal droid, just made longer in length. This added length would have to be measured out precisely or the droid could be out of proportion. Which would be bad overall for the droid, it would be a fatal flaw before they had even begun. She didn't want that to happen, so she would have the engineers measure out how long both the arms and legs would be. Proportion was a key to the build, without it one had nothing more than scrap. Kota figured that she would need a total of eight beams for the lower and upper body, then however a crude piece would have to be figured out and that was how the pieces were going to connect. This was something to discuss with the engineers, as she really had no clue on some of this nature.

After discussing with the engineers she figured each beam had to be about forty inches combined from hand to shoulders for the arms. For the legs each beam had to make a combined total of about fourty five inches to foot. Kota also figured out some joints for both arms and legs. The elbow one would be a little smaller than the knee, however both would be coated in Ultracrome.
Ultracrome was reflected blaster and slugthrowers, also heavy reflected lightsabers. So the metal was perfect for the prison, in case of an escape. However Ultracrome had a weakness, if enough energy was shifted to it the metal would melt. This was why these pieces were going to be just coated. The durasteel would help balance out the weakness and have the pieces hold for a little bit longer. The idea was to deter one from these areas, hopefully the escapee would be detained by the time they figured out what was going on.
The pieces themselves would be similar to that of a gear, they needed to be able to move. Having a droid unable to move served no purpose. It would make a total of two arms and two legs when completely assembled. Kota would have to figure out how these arms and legs would connect to the body later. She figured out that she would have to test out how long someone like her might have to cut one of the Ultracrome dipped pieces, just so she could get a rough estimate of how long one had before the knee or elbow was done. Kota figured it was best to know these things in case of emergency. Future inquisitors would have to be trained on how long they had to respond to a break out. The next thing to figure out was the chest area, she wasn't sure if she should make a full chest or a hollow one with just beams to support it. Another thing she would have to ask the engineers.

The chest would be a complex piece, first thing that would have made would have to be done was the basic inside structure. Kota figured at least three beams on the inside, one beam across for the shoulders, one for the legs, and one for the neck and center. She figured each beam needed a means of how to connect the legs, arms, and neck to. The beams would also serve as a means to hold what gears and wires the droids would need to function. The next part she figured would be the circuit board. The circuit board would be the heart of the droid so to speak. It would have to have a top of the line processor, so it could handle the stress of what it would be programmed for. The board would be attached to the back of the beams, she thought that would be a better spot than the front.
The wires would also have to be connected to the board, Kota figured that it would be best to have different color wires for each function. This was just for maintenance purpose, this way nothing could be screwed up. Red for the arms, green for the legs, and black for the neck, she would make sure that it would be on the blueprints for maintenance. They would need access to this part at least, so she would make sure that they knew what was what. Kota thought that the wires would wrap around their respective beams, like the red wires would wrap around the beams for the shoulders. They would have to be long enough to get outside the chest plate when it was put on.
The processor would be a complex piece, she figured she would add a small piece of metal around it. The metal would be ultracrome coated like the gears, but it would only be a very small piece. The metal itself would be attached to the circuit board and the processor wired with some small black wires.

The next part up was the guns, they were complicated. She figured that they would need gears similar to the knees and elbows. They would need to be thick, but capable of moving up and down. The gears would be attached to the beam that went across for the arms. It would be best if they were placed close to the wear the neck would go, but not close enough to cause problems with the neck. Attached to each gear would have to be a small sturdy beam for the gun to sit on. Wires would be ran to the gears to the circuit board, Kota figured white would be the best color for this. The blasters at the top would be duel barrelled and flat at the top. When the armor was made it would have to be made around the blasters, so that they could properly move up and down, to be hidden one minute then visible the next. She would have to make sure that they had a fast response time as far as moving up and down. Their firing speed and strength would be that of a blaster. She would test the blasters when the construstion began, it would be the best way to test them.

The circuit board would not only have the wires for all of the parts in the chest area to connect to, but also several advanced circuits on the board. These circuits would help run the robot run with the processor. It would have to be specifically designed to give the robot optional functions. Kota would leave that up to the engineers to design, because she lacked the knowledge to do so. She figured that there would have to be another wire as well, this one for the neck. Those wires would be an orange color, hooked up at the top of the circuit board.

A part of the inside of the chest as well the shield generator would have to be placed. Kota felt that this critical piece would also have to be coated to help protect it better. She also felt that it should be away from the processor, this way no one could tske out both at once. Though it was most likely that if one got to this point the droid was on its last legs so to speak. The generator would go on the left side, like where the heart would normally be and the processor on the right, this was done to confuse the attacker. It also potentally gives the droid time to subdue its attacker, cause it wouldn't take long for the attavker to figure out the processor was on the other side. The generator itself would be that of a commonly used one. They had been used on ships and droids often. So that the part would be easy to get and do maintenance, also it was doubtful that an escapee would have the necessary items to get past the shield unless it was an inside job.

The next parts of the droid were the gears to connect the arms, legs, and neck. Kota figured they too needed to be like the knees and elbows, coated, however these needed to be the same thickness and length as each other. This was simply to ensure that each arm, leg, and the neck was able to move without trouble. Also would get the best response time from the droid as far as moving and responding to a threat. She didn't want a sluggish robot just cause of its size, it needed to move as fast as possible without complications. Calibration would have to be done when it was built to see how fast the droid could go without problems.

After the draft of the design was finished there would be an overview of it. She realized in the review that the waist area had no way to turn to the sides nor did the wrists or feet have any flexibility. This would be an issue down the road, these parts would next flexibility in battle more so than anything else. A simple fix for the wrists and feet was to put a ball joint there at the end of the piece with the gear. It would make for some movement, she didn't need it to be extreme just like a human movingmoving so there would be a piece to restrict what it did. The hip would have to be more like the neck, it needed to twist to the sides more than the wrists. This movement would be essential for battle, one couldn't have a non moving droid that made for an easy target.

With these things found and addressed she continued to look it over She found she had forgotten to secure the database to anything. That part was essientual it needed to be secure in the head, so she felt that it would be attached to the neck beam as well as have sheets of metal attached to the armor itself on the inside. So that when the helm was placed on there would be means to hold the database inside. To ensure that it didn't go up and down there would be a secure sheet on the top and bottom, built on the inside when the database was put in. Kota felt that interlocking mechinisims would lock the pieces together when all of them interacted with each other.

She continued to look over the draft, she wanted to make sure that nothing else was needed or missing. She even made sure that all the wires would be in place for everything. All was essential in giving the droid proper function and not cause issues down the road.

Now it was time to get the supplies for the actual building of the droids. The wires wouldn't be hard at all as wires were basically anywhere, durasteel would be easy to get as well, the circuits and board would be in technology to get, as well as the processor and database, the eyes wouldn't be hard either, nor would the shield generator, the hardest thing would be the ultracrome. Ultracrome it seemed wasn't widely used since the Great Sith war which was a long time ago. She would have to track it down and make sure she found enough to make at least twenty droids, plus have extra incase.

Kota would have someone look into finding the ultracrome, in the meantime she had some molds made to precise width and length for the pouring of the durasteel for the arms and legs. There would be four molds made one for lower legs, one for upper leg, one for lower arm, and one for upper. This way each droid had the exact same length in arms and legs. It would take time doing it this way, but it ensured quality in the long run. After the molds were done the durasteel would be melted to pour into the molds. They would have to set and cool, so the molds could come off easily and be reused to cast more pieces. She figured a couple hours at the least, she didn't really know. Casting metal in molds wasn't something she had done on this scale before, molding a lightsaber was far easier in her mind. Kota figured that after this first one she would at least have a better idea of how long it actually needed to sit. Even after this first one was casted, she would have them start casting the others. It was going to take months from her calculations just casting the metal was far more time consuming than she realized.

After four pieces were cast for two legs it required the gears to connect them, the mold had to be created that would be used for the knees. However she still had to get the Ultracrom here. Kota had heard that a seller of the material was a few planets away from Basition, she figured another person could handle buying the material and having it brought here while she worked. In the mean time, she could have the molds made for the other pieces. She counted at least two more molds for the arms, two for the chest, one for the neck, one for the head, and at least four other gear molds. That wasn't accounting for the armor that would go on after it was done, so about eight more molds had to be made. At the least when the molds were done she could start casting parts that didn't get the ultracrome.

Once the molds were done she started having the arms cast, the beams inside the neck cast, and the ones inside the chest. Kota also had them cast more legs as well, might as well start getting them made so a production line could be made once the ultracrome got here. She would make sure the pieces went into marked containers so that no confusion would be made upon assembly. She couldn't have pieces getting mixed up upon assembly, then the robots wouldn't come out right or some would be different, just cause of the mix up. That wouldn't go over well if she had some robots that were right and others that weren't. Kota also made sure the containers were separated by a few feet so that one piece couldn't accidentally fall into another container. It should minimize the chance of such a thing happening, but there was still human error. So someone would have to keep an eye on the containers to make sure that parts went where they were supposed to go.

After a couple weeks the shipment of ultracrome arrived the other pieces could finally be costructed. She wanted the pieces that needed the ultacrome to be hot off the molds when coated with the ultracrome. When the first set of gears were constructed after a few hours the legs started to be put together the standard nuts and bolts used on any droid would be used to connect the pieces. After they were bolted together a simple flex test of the legs would be done by simply moving the pieces back and forth with hands. This needed to be done to ensure that the legs could bend without any issues. After this simple test was done the legs would be attached to a durasteel beam through another set of gears to the top parts of the legs, these were shorter gears they didn't need to move as much thus why they were shorter. These gears would be welded at the top part of the gears to the beam rather than nuts and bolts. It would add a bit more stability and strength to the legs. The bottom of the gears though the nuts and bolts so that the legs would have back and forth movement. After this was done the leg was tested like the before, to ensure that it could move.

The beam then would be connected to the next durasteel beam with a ball joint, this way the hips could turn sort of. It needed a small piece of metal on each side of the ball joint to prevent it from turning completely around. The small pieces would be welded to the beams to hold the ball joint in place so that the joint wouldn't slip causing the droid loose its legs. After this was done a test would be made to see if the beam could twist and stop like she wanted.

When the test was completed, as much as she could, she had the joint attached to another beam that went long ways rather than flat, this was to be the main support for the chest. Attached at the top of this beam was yet another beam wielded, this one would hold the arms. In the middle of this the computer board, processor, and wires would go. They would have to be carefully bolted to the durasteel posts so that it wouldnt move when the robot moved, or was tossed. These were the more expensive parts of this droid so one screw up and the project would be at a loss. After these were attached the next thing was the personal generator, this would be in front of the board. This way if someone some how got through the shield, they would stab the generator, giving the droid more of a chance to stop them. Hopefully it would not take the droid to stop them at that point, but one never really knew. All she could do was attempt to give the droids a chance.

After this was done Kota had the wires carefully done, she wrapped the colors around their respective beams to a point. She couldn't go all the way cause they might end up in the way and then she would have to start over. These wires were carefully placed when the board was made so she didn't want to send the entire board back because of some wires that accidently were in the way. Starting over was not something she wanted to do for anything. When this was completed to her liking, she started to attach the arms. They each would need a ball socket much like the legs. These too would be coated in ultracrome, just to provide extra protection should one get that far.

After these minor tests were done, another ball joint was made. This was for the neck. A smaller beam would also need to be molded, then soddered to the ball joint. This was so the beam would have more stability when it turned from side to side. Another ball joint was attached at the top, this too would be soddered to the beam. The next step was to make the skull, this part would be tricky, it would half to be molded as halfs. This was so everything in the skull could be placed and secured, the first thing was the database. A small box would ge placed around the database just to secure it better in the skull. Welding the box to the skull, placing the database in there was a small hole, that the wires were feed through, then welding the top of the box closed. The fiber optics would be placed below the box facing away from the half the box was attached to. They had to be carefully wired and then attached to the box so that they wouldn't move.

There was nothing more to place in the skull, so she had the wires lead down before the second half would be attached. It would have two holes in it for the fiber optics, the two sides would be wielded together. A hole would be at the bottom that the wires would come out of as well the ball joint to attach to. The wires would be wrapped around the small beam after the ball joint was secure in the hole. They would be lead down to the processor by wrapping them carefully, much like she had inside the chest. One of the last things she had to do was to place the blasters, these were a complex piece.

These would be made of tinier durasteel beams, a total of two beams for each blaster. Also one smaller ball joint between the two beams so that it could bend and turn. The would have to be resitricted so the blasters could not aim at the droid. It would be bad to have the droid shoot itself. Once these pieces were together the bottom beams would have to be weilded to the top beam that goes to the arms. One would be placed about the same space on the beam one each side of the head. A simple moving test once they were weilded to the beams, just to make sure they could move. After this was done the wires were carefully wrapped much like the chest.

When these tasks were done a simple activation test could be achieved with remotes, without progamming. With this test she could see what worked and what might not be attached correctly. A computer would be brought and hooked directly to the processor, the simple commands could be made through the computer. With a technicians help she had it hooked, then had them put in simple commands such as move right arm. Kota watched intently when the command was put in, there was a slight delay but the arm moved. The delay is something that could be fixed with programming and fine tuning. A simple run through of all the simple commands from moving knees to moving the neck. Once these simple tests were completed and she was satisfied nothing was going to fall apart she had the computer removed.

When these things were done the next thing to do was to mold armor. This would be mostly done with durasteel. A few of the pieces would be coated with the ultracrome much like parts of the inside.

Again much like the beams, the armor molds would have to be cast one at a time, so that all pieces fit and were exactly alike. The armor around the legs would be molded into two durasteel pieces one for the upper thigh and one for the lower leg. One piece would have to be made for both legs, so a total of four pieces of armor for the legs. Also a durasteel cast would need to be made for the feet for better stablity, so two would be made total. The arms would also be made of durasteel, one for upper arm and one for the lower arm. Much like the legs one of these pieces would have to be cast for both arms, so four pieces total. Unlike the legs however the hands needed to be flexible, so tiny pieces of durasteel had to be made sort of like a glove. The hand had to be able to grip its weapon, this would be tricky to mold and create. It had to be done twice for this droid, which would be several tiny pieces of durasteel for both hands. These molds would have to be carefully made and cast, then carefully labeled so that each piece was laid out on the hands with accuracy. When the armor pieces were laid out on the hand and fastened it had to be tested for movement. Kota had to make sure the fingers could move freely and grip tightly without issues. She moved the wires that ran to the hands carefully, just to test how well they moved or if there was conflict with the tiny pieces of durasteel it could be addressed now instead of later. There didn't seem to be any upon close inspection after the wire test, but the true test would be when the programming ran.

The chest was a far more difficult piece than one might think, molds would not not only have to be exact there would have to be a back and front cast. The tricky parts of these molds would be not only would they be coated in ultracrome, but they would have to have two very exact spaces on each side as well as one for the neck. These spaces would be for the small hidden guns that where on the shoulders. Together the two spaces would form two boxes on the sides around where the neck would go. So measurements would have to be made from neck to the edge of the blasters and from the other edge of the blasters to the end of the shoulders. The measurements would be done several times on both the molds and the body frame, they had to be exact. If they were off even by a centimeter the mold would have to be remade and the chest recasted, this would be more expensive than the other pieces. This was far larger pieces being coated in ultracrome, mistakes simply couldn't be afforded.

It would be a few hours of simply measuring before the molds were casted, as they got cool they were coated with the ultracrome. Carefully the pieces would have to be lined on the body, the back piece first. It would make it easier to wield the two pieces together if they fit around the areas they needed to correctly. After the body was carefully set on the back she made sure the blasters and neck aligned as center as she could in the spaces forged. Carefully the front of the chest was placed on the body, again it had to line up with the other piece of armor, the blasters, and make sure no pieces inside would be disturbed.

It was difficult to get the two pieces exact as well as making sure that nothing under was disturbed. Once it was finally set right, the pieces were carefully wielded together. The blasters covers were more complex as they had to be only small sheets that covered the holes. These sheets not only had to be exact for the holes, but they would have to be coated with the ultracrome. Also these sheet would have to move up and down with the blasters, so they had to be secure and durable. The blasters not only had to be carefully brought up out of the freshly wielded armor, but then carefully wield the sheets on them without screwing up the blasters.

This was a complex procedure, because there was a higher chance for the wielding to mess up the blasters which ment tearing up the inside. That would be costly and time consuming something that wasn't that could happen. Careful hours would be spent just simply doing one of these sheets. Once these were finally done, they had to be sorta tested. It was just simply moving the blasters up and down with careful wire pulls. The real test couldn't be done till the droid was done, which could still be disasterous if it did work right.

She had to move on with the neck, it would have its own complication. Though it would be simple durasteel that would cover it, this would also be a sorta moving piece. It was also a more complex piece to wield to as it had a smaller beam with wire simply wrapped up it. One miss with the wielding gun would cause the wire to melt, malfunction, and cause a costly rewiring job. First thing to do was to make the armor that would fit the neck, it would have to be measured to exactly the right size between the current body armor, and where the head armor would go.

It was probably easier to do around the head then come back to the neck. It would be far easier to get exact measurements that would be needed for the durasteel pieces that would cover the neck. So for the head three holes would have to be in the mold. Two would hold where the opticals would go for the droid to see, the other would be a much smaller hole that would be for programming and maitence. This hole would be covered with a small screwable sheet of metal as to not expose it. The armor for the head would be coated in ultracrome as well, so measurements around the frame had to be exact as well as where the optics for the eyes.

Once again mistakes would be costly, so measurements were done several times before the mold was cast. Rather than make this piece two like so much of the droid, this piece was made whole. However before it could be put on, the attachment for the database had to be ran from the database to where the hole in the back was. One not only had to wire around the skull frame, it had to attach exactly where the hole was. It couldn't be off even a centimeter or everything would haveto be redone. This was not an easy task, as it had to be done several times. The attachment was just so small and easily moved, perhaps it would have been easier to set this first. Either way it didnt matter as the other droids would have to be exact as well. It would only be after several hours and the force to help would the piece finally be set. After it was set the piece of armor made for the head frame was slid on much like a helm. It would have to be secured with wielding so that it wouldn't shift when the droid moved its head.

Measurements between the helm armor and the body armor would be made multiple times like every other piece before they were molded and placed. They had to be careful when wielded because of the wiring, so slowly the durasteel was tagged with the wielding gun. When the wires were carefully inside after the tagging was done the wielding was completed.

With the droid almost completely armored one thing to do was programming. Programming was probably the more complex of tasks, as so many things had to be put in the droid. It had to have from the simple tasks such as movements, to advanced combat. So coding needed to be done on a disk, then transfered by a cable from a computer. They had to make sure when making the code that it covered everything that was needed. Also built into the coding was to be put in the three voices that the droid would listen to Argus, Doren, and her's through her helm. Kota didn't want any conflict of interest showing up down the road.

This programming could be altered down the road, but for the moment only the three voices would have the capability to access the programming. As they would be the only ones capable of stopping the droids short of destroying one. It would take days for the programming to be finished, it also had to be reviewed to make sure all the coding was there. This would take more days which would in total amount to weeks more.

When the coding was finally finished the droid was set up on a chair carefully, it would be strapped there for the simple purpose of holding it in place till the programming was finished downloading into the attachment in the head. The cord was carefully placed where the attachment was and a button was pressed. The code that had been carefully done began to download into the droid.

It would take hours for the program to download into the droid database. There was something she could have done in the meantime. A special weapon had to be made for the huge droid, one it could grasp and yet easily move to strike. A large spear of sorts would have to be made, but it wouldn't be a thrown weapon. It would be a weapon that could knock an opponent out or kill them, thus the sharp end. Measurements would have to be made to see how big the hands were, then put into a computer to see how round the staff part could be comfortably in its hands. It was a simple circumference that the computer determined would fit, so a mold could be made. However it also had to be determined how big the sharp end could be, this was again something the computer did. Also measured was the height of the weapon, couldn't have it be to long or the droid and the building wouldn't be able to handle it. So simple calculations were made to give the weapon optional height.

Once this was done a mold was made, the weapon was to made with durasteel, it would takei time for this to cast since it was such a large piece. She doubted highly if such a huge weapon was made this way before, but this guaranteed that there was no weak spots in the weapon. After it was set it would take several men to move the weapon from the cast, after all it was not made for a human to move. That would give the droid some advantage, a force user would most likely struggle with such a large weapon. Finally with it set aside the programming had finished its download. This would be the moments that would define this time as a success or waste of resources and time.
