folks - so I hear through the grape vine that people are a bit put out they can't edit their posts. Let me explain the situation in a bit more detail.
The new board software allows quite a lot of granulation of permissions and user groups. You'll already have noticed that new members names are in pale turquoise, while registered members are turquoise, and full members are dark turquoise.
- New members are people who have less than 10 posts. At the moment, because we're moving the board, they can post anywhere without approval, but after a few weeks they will require post approval to post anywhere except the new member forums.
New Members may not edit their posts at all.
- Registered members have 10 or more but less than 150 posts.
Registered members may edit their posts, but only for 20 minutes after the original post was made.
- Full members have 150+ posts.
They may also edit their posts with a 20 minute window, and may ignore the post flood limit (make multiple posts in short order), and have a few other features the lower ranks don't have.
So why the editing limit? We've been seeing an increasing amount of people editing posts after several replies have been made to that post, either to change the action or to increase the post count to fulfil a requirement. This makes a lot of topics very confusing, invalidating later action or making later posters look strange. We also want to discourage the idea that you can make a low effort post and try to get away with it, correcting your mistake only if a staff member pulls you up on it.
I do realise that one reason for editing is to correct a godmod or something else an opponent or thread participant objects to. I would encourage people not to god mod in the first place, and in the event of a god mod try to amicably work around the issue without changing the text of the original post.
In other words, treating the editing function as a safety net against sloppy, incorrect or insufficient RP isn't a good thing, and so we've made the decision to force people in to being a bit more mindful of what they post in future.
Hope that all makes sense! I realise it's a bit extreme, but the problem was getting worse and worse.

If that is something that had been increasingly creeping in I whole heartedly agree with the reason why editing has been limited. For me the edit button was used to correct spelling and grammatical errors I had previously missed and nothing more so I guess I'm going to have to be more careful re-reading my posts before I post them.

Yes, I totally agree Xerxes, and that's why you have 20 minutes to re-read your post after clicking submit and make your edit. I think it is the best possible solution that we could create for the new forum.

Yes, just to re-iterate/summarise:
If you've made less than 10 posts you can't edit at all.
If you've made more than 10 posts you'll be able to edit up to 20 mins after posting.
Personally I'd love for there to be an option to lock editing when someone has replied, but no dice unfortunately.

Not to complain about editing twenty minutes after posting, but I figured out colors after I posted the force system. If I had known I would have done it as I posted. Did page two but not page one, so if someone wants to make it pretty just letting you know

In a similar frame of mind as making posts and threads pretty after the fact, but slightly more site relevant. Can we put into place a way for Faction Leaders to make edits for their faction boards. Namely what I'm referring to in this case is for house keeping of faction information and changes to the faction in general, to keep our boards up to date and accurate for new and old members and guest alike.
Instead of having to continually reply to a faction information thread and have a string of threads updating these topics; it would be very useful as a faction leader to slip in and make the edits needed in said threads.

The problem with crawling into a hole... having the motivation to climb back out!

That's actually a really good point. Under the current system for instance buggie couldn't edit the list of who has swtf status because it's been 20 minutes since he posted who does have it. Unless his tier allows for that. Either way faction leaders and mods should have that.

Yes, at the moment we haven't set faction leaders as forum moderators yet. But of course when that's been done they'll be able to edit/stick/unstick as before.

This doesn't really affect me too much, but I am kind of imagining the flood of separate posts when some noobie tries to learn the Force and needs to make changes... Probably makes it harder to do inline in a thread.

I'll take care of it. Thanks!
