Outland Mining - Flight 0719 - Blue Star Pirates

Post by Master Buggie » Sun Jul 07, 2019 11:41 pm

With Outland 02 safe and secure at a Blue Star Pirate depot, the time to retrieve Outland 01 from the repair bay had come. As a result of this, Buggie found himself seated within his StarViper-class attack platform's cockpit once again. Tasked with providing escort to the former Antarian Ranger, Gary Storm, who was flying the Outland 01, Buggie would keep the heavy hauler safe until Storm could rendezvous with the Outland 02. Since the Outland 01 was ordinarily slaved to its twin's navigation computer, it was necessary to bring both heavy freighters to one another so that Blue Star Pirate technicians could re-establish the link and resume normal operations where Storm and Buggie flew both on smuggling runs and other missions that were logistical in nature.

"Looks like since we're out and about, we've been tasked with picking up some cargo from the next sector over," Storm reported through Buggie's helmet-mounted comlink.

While this meant that the Outland 01 would be exposed to danger, seeing as the next sector over was hostile, Buggie clicked an affirmative into his comlink and began to run through a systems check to make sure his fighter was still combat ready.

"On your mark then, Outland 01," Buggie called, as the two ships neared the navigation buoy.

Just a sector away, Prazutis sat, irritated inside the cockpit of his ETA 2-class interceptor. Once more, imperial intelligence had told him of a shipment coming through one of their sectors, and that the Verlaine was aboard. This would most likely be the last time he listened to them if this mission didn’t go through, however. Twice, they had told him this and twice their information had been off on the shipping path and the Verlaine Jedi passed Prazutis without either of them knowing of the other’s Presence until after the fact. But today, Prazutis hoped it would be different. Both for his sake, and for the informants in Imperial Intelligence.

As soon as the transport and it’s single escort shot out of hyperspace, Prazutis took not of their presence and while ordering his pilot droid, he moved to cut off their path and first move to disable the transport’s thrusters, ensuring it can’t escape when he goes to dock.
“Droid, get the escort’s fire, try to flush him away from the transport while I move to immobilize it.” Prazutis spoke, both ships now making a B-line for the front of the transport, the droid pilot breaking off while Prazutis pushed ahead, right towards the bridge of the ship.

Buggie casually deactivated the hyperdrive at the proper time, and his vessel, as well as the heavy transport he was escorting dropped out of hyperspace. Immediately, the sensors on his StarViper-class attack platform pulsed a warning tone throughout the cockpit, warning Buggie of two vessels on an intercept path toward Outland 01. It only took a moment of studying the sensor readings for Buggie to determine that this was no mistake. Both incoming vessels were traveling at attack speed, indicating that Buggie needed to act now before he left them an opening to attack the unarmed transport.

"Storm--" Buggie warned, as he went about adjusting the shields to double-front.

Buggie wasn't required to finish his warning, as Storm's voice immediately sounded over the helmet-mounted comlink, "I see them."

By now, Storm would be signaling for the small team of droids aboard the Outland 01 to activate and take position at the vessel's shield generator. These droids-- typically in charging mode during regular operation of the ship-- served the purpose of boosting the hauler's essential systems in the event of an ambush. They had proven their worth several times over, and the fact that the Outland 01 had only had to undergo one significant stay in the repair docks was evidence enough of their efficiency. The shields would be boosted shortly, Buggie knew, and now it was his job to buy the required time for that to take place.

Locking his starfighter's s-foils in attack position, Buggie maneuvered on a vector that would intercept the raiding craft. If he were the raiders, his focus would be to eliminate the escort craft, leaving the transport ripe for the picking and relatively defenseless. As Buggie watched the range tick down quickly on his sensors, he prepared himself to level out the shields after the first exchange of laser cannon fire.

The droid pilot made a simple jousting maneuver towards the escort ship, wildly firing at the fighter as it made a close pass, soaring by before quickly making a wide turn to try again.

Meanwhile, Prazutis made the length of the ship, not firing on the outside as he knew the shields would prevent most anything from hitting until he moved to the shield generator. However, as soon as he got past the back end of the ship, he quickly spun around, seeing the thrusters and firing a small barrage of laser bolts into the thrusters themselves, trying to at least temporarily disable their functions.

The first exchange was indecisive, as Buggie's starfighter sped past the enemy craft, having exchanged laser cannon fire back and forth. With shields now balanced, Buggie eyed his shipboard readings briefly in order to confirm that no serious damage had been sustained. Finding nothing of note, Buggie ruddered hard to the port side and wheeled his ship around in pursuit. A quick glance spared at his scopes showed that the Z-95 that had fired wildly at him was also maneuvering for another pass on his fighter. Visually confirming that the Eta-2 was headed for the transport, Buggie maintained course to pursue.

While the Eta-2 was quite a bit faster than what his StarViper-class attack platform was capable of, a focus scan on both enemy vessels shared by Outland 01 revealed that his own fighter's shields were theoretically more durable than both enemy craft, shields and hull, combined. Knowing that his ship had some heft to leverage in this fight. What that meant immediately was that Buggie was willing to take a few hits if it meant he could get that Eta-2 off the transport.

Pushing the engines to full attack speed, Buggie made for the transport, knowing the Z-95 was in pursuit. Just as the Eta-2 turned hard to engage the transport, Buggie linked his four laser cannons to fire dual linked. Engaging his laser cannons, as he didn't yet have time to produce a missile lock, Buggie let loose a stitching of amber-colored laser fire, hoping to dissuade the Eta-2 from committing to a substantial attack on the transport.

Droid, try to hammer the shield generators, now!” Prazutis spoke before pulling up, only a few lasers from his ship actually hitting the thrusters before he pulled off, the droid breaking off its pursuit of the escort and creating a bit of distance before turning and sending a heavy load of fire onto the shield generator. Prazutis turned and focused his attention now on the fighter, hoping to simply eliminate another factor in this battle before boarding the transport to find the real prize: the Verpine he had so adamentally sought out.

Buggie was now caught in a difficult position-- abandoning his line on the Eta-2 would allow the enemy pilot to swoop right back around and fire on the transport's engines, while sticking with the Eta-2 would allow the Z-95 free reign to fire on the transport while Buggie was pulled away in pursuit. As all of these considerations passed through Buggie's mind in a moment, he drew upon the information that had been presented to him. He had seen that the Eta-2 was equipped with ion cannons, which could feasibly break down the transport's shields and impact individual ship systems. An enemy vessel equipped with warheads would do a considerable amount of damage, as well, but at least that required a missile lock for precision firing.

The transport had enough shield power to fend off a few rounds against each ship, especially when the droids were able to power up the shield generator. If Buggie could take down one of the fighters before the shield generators reached their boosted capacity, the skirmish was all but won.

For that reason, he maintained pursuit of the Eta-2, even as it pulled away from its initial maneuver against the transport. The Z-95 had been firing almost the entirety of the battle, and with any luck, its laser cannons might need time to recharge soon. Buggie attempted to keep up with the faster Eta-2, clutching his control yoke with chitinous fingers on the firing controls, patiently waiting for his HUD to indicate he should fire his laser cannons at the lesser shielded starfighter.

Prazutis cursed under his breath as he led the escort a small distance away from the transport, the barrage of lasers from the Droid pilot ramming into the ship, the shields protecting their generator, for the most part.
“Alright, prepare your ion weapons and make another run for the generator as soon as possible. I’ll hold off the escort.”

Prazutis thought for a moment before disengaging his main thrusters completely, turning the ship while it continued moving with the momentum it held from the thrusters. The ship now moved backwards, facing the fighter in pursuit before Prazutis fired, kicking the thrusters on again to try and speed past the escort without getting hit. Prazutis was no ace pilot, but the ETA was definitely a ship he was familiar with and because of that, he knew certain tricks with its controls.
