A Return to Business as Usual

"Nurse" a sarcastic call rang out around the infirmary as a young man, dressed in blue coveralls turned to the caller. Xerxes had long been working with Dr H'ril and Dr Gorman in the infirmary for about a month now and he had settled into the role quite quickly. This was a baptism by fire kind of teaching but, one that suited the lad best. He shimmied over to the bed where a fellow technician lay. "Honestly Kid, what are you doing wasting your time in here?" the jovial ensign said with a hitch in his voice as he inhaled a flicker of pain crossing his face "You're a mechanic" another flicker of pain "we all know it, this is just slowing you down." Xerxes couldn't help but smile the man was right in a way but he couldn't stop what he was doing. There was a method to what was going on and he simply replied "I'm just doing a rotation while the Doctors are here as they've helped me out in the past and have offered to teach me." Looking down at the man he felt a twinge of sympathetic pain in his ribs but didn't let it show "Besides who said I can't mend organic as well as metallic" Xerxes cast a mock appraising look over the pirate "Though with you I may need a tech kit rather than a med kit" that brought a pained chuckle from the man and Xerxes reached out a hand and set to work.

Force Training Level 10 (Start)

Xerxes allowed the Force to enter him, he didn't reach out for it, he didn't claim it he did nothing other than to break down the barriers that surrounded his form, surrendering his individuality within the Force while holding onto the physical was difficult. It was different from the quey'tek mask technique that had his signature shrink and become lost and it was separate from simply allowing himself to be lost in the Force as he didn't during meditation. With this he destroyed the barrier separating his Force self but, retained his own cohesion within the Force becoming something akin to a sponge in water. This laid him bare to the whims of the Force but he had to focus on the physical and the patient unable to even guard against the simplest incursion and as such he was constantly being assailed by illusionary aches and pains the Force rippled away from the injured translating into his own pain by his deep connection to the Force and his recent training and learning in how the body worked and functioned. As he tended to the man he felt the dull ache of a bruise, the fiery heat contained within of inflammation and a sharp grating pain, all associated with his chest. He could tell from the sympathetic pain he was experiencing that the man was in pretty bad shape, despite the joking, if he could feel this much then he hated to think how his patient truly felt.

As he checked over his patient as Dr Gorman and the nurses had trained him he reached out with the Force creating a bubbled around the man, this became something akin to his usual defence from the Force, even those not as sensitive to it as he could be swayed by it and here in the infirmary there was a lot of negative energy that could poorly affect the recovery of the patients. However it also acted as a containment field, as he currently was he had relatively poor control of his power and creating this sphere would contain any of his power that went awry and feed it back into the system, capturing it and reflecting it back. Focusing his mind he reached into the being of the man before him, although he couldn't hope to hold back the pain the same way he could himself he could combine the skills he had learned. First he located the damaged area, within the Force and drew a bead on it, palpitating the injured area allowed him to observe the spike of pain as they rippled through the man to him through their connection. He followed them as he had himself several times and found the section of the mind that dealt with the pain response. This was going to be a two step process, having located the processing centre for pain he started to create a false loop, rerouting some of the signal into a dead end away from the true neural pathways responsible for what he was feeling and thereby limiting some of the pain. The second was to isolate the initial pain receptors, he flood the area with a competitive antagonist, these bound to the receptors preventing the signal from the nerves ever firing and thereby creating a gating mechanism now he was only able to capture ten percent at best of the receptors in the Force antagonised area but, the combined effects of his efforts saw his patients breathing ease and his vitals start to return normal, though heart rate and breathing remained elevated.

Vitals, he looked at the sats on the monitor and knew instinctively what was wrong. Oxygen was too low, the heart was trying to compensate by beating faster but, the issue was the prolonged hypoventilation brought about by pain had seen a build up of carbon dioxide in the blood which was causing the hyperventilation now. Normally one treated it by getting the patient to breath slowly and deeply but, with his pain eased the patient was essentially gulping in air but wasn't able to sift the CO2 quickly enough. That was a simple enough problem to fix, a skill he had learnt long ago resurfacing. He pictured he arrangement of atoms in the carbon dioxide molecule, the two slightly smaller oxygen molecules crowding in on the carbon molecule, affixed to it would be an iron molecule trapped within the helix of protein that helped form the blood cell in the human body. He changed the arrangement of molecules, affixing a single oxygen to the iron and cutting the bonds of the remaining CO allowing the two molecules to float free transferring the remaining oxygen to myoglobin or misplacing carbon dioxide on the blood cells into the plasma resulting in the more prevalent issue of carboxylic acid. This however could be used to help, taking the free carbons from the cleavage on the blood vessels to attract hydrogen and affix it to the carboxylic acid functional groups changed the molecule from acid to alcohol, ethanoic alcohol to be precise. As a result as he slowly detoxified the poisonous carbon dioxide build up from the patients system he also added an additional anaesthetic like effect by getting the man slightly drunk further helping in efforts to dull his pain while preventing the harm caused by the laboured breathing from being an ongoing issue. As he watched he saw the man's lips get pinker and his breathing relax, his eyes slowly losing focus as his mind dulled slightly from the mild inebriation, there wouldn't be enough to get the man drunk but, in the situation it was more than enough for his purposes.

Having gotten the man into a state of questionable mind he closed the curtains to the bay and closed his eyes. The second sight came into sharper focus with the outline of the patient before him but more than that he could sense the subtle changes in his Force signature that told him where the physical damage was located. Emanating from a elongated point with greater impact nearer the medial line alone the seventh rib, Xerxes placed his hand over the affected area and felt the general fatigue and damage from the injury. He couldn't do anything to help in its healing directly however, he closed his hand into a tight fist over the injured area squeezing until his knuckled turned white and popped, a tremendous pressure that had his nails digging painfully into the flesh of his palm but he blocked this all out instead creating a focal point, a super dense orb of energy that got smaller and smaller and he further compressed it, in his mind what had been a bright nova of power grew darker, smaller, heavier and as he shrunk it he felt the surrounding power start to stir and move drawn in slowly at first but, he started t see subtle changes in the flow as the natural energy started to get drawn in and as he watched the local motes of stagnating power moved, caught in the new tidal current as the dense power drew more and more to it then he started to released his grip slowly. As he did so he kept the pressure on, easing it off as slowly as he had gripped it quickly stopping as soon as he felt the slightest decrease in pull or saw the most miniscule change in the new current. By slowly opening his hand as he did he was trying to keep the orb in a semi self-perpetual. By the time he had opened his hand the sphere spun in lazy circles drawing in only as much power that it needed to continue itself looking like a facsimile of a galaxy, he started to direct it down and into the patient on the bed towards the injury. He fed it into the obstructed area connecting it in and allowing it to slowly feed power into the system giving it a slow boost to enhance the natural effects of the healing. The power drawn in by the orb would be less than that which was bled off but the different was such that the orb should continue to rejuvenate and invigorate the surrounding physical body for hours while preventing stagnation as it forced the energy within the patient along the paths that it would normally take. Hopefully in their medication and alcohol induced state of languish they didn't notice the oddity of what he was doing or the actual effect it seemed to have on their body.

Finally he repurposed an old skill, the inflammation that was plaguing the area was doing more harm than good, the spike in temperature and swelling would cause the fracture to shift and distort the alignment of the bone. So having placed the orb of power to enhance the natural processes within the body he set about drawing the heat in the flesh out. Tendrils of Force speared the ethereal flesh and wrapped around the protective bubble he had formed earlier, from there he started to create a secondary barrier around his hand using the tendrils to act as conductors. In his mind he had the impression of a peltier device and having created what he needed he started to alter the flow of the Force to create something akin to an electrical current, the flow of power energising the two surfaces, the smaller orb of inflamed flesh started to cool as the heat was transferred to the larger surface, his hand. This led to heat bleeding off the patient as his internal inflammation cooled and decreased as the back of Xerxes hand became hotter and hotter bleeding off more heat. He bit down on his pain from the heat and created a snaking tendril of power that fed back into the smaller wires that created the current absorbing as much of the excess heat as he could and transforming it back into electrical power, this spotted the skin on his hand burning and peeling but also lessened the burden of this cooling affect on his reserves, energy was still lost and spent, even with the power of the Force perpetual cycles of lossless energy use and production were impossible but it gave him what he needed. This controlled and harnessed form of cooperative cyrokinesis and pyrokinesis could have been done without this effect but, he doubted his control over what he had always seen as a battle technique was good enough alone to cool flesh slowly without causing damage. Finally he felt the internal temperature of the injury reaching something close to normal body temperature once again and he pulled away. The connection broken he felt the coolness of the underside of his hand and realised that water had condensed where they had been in contact with the patient, as an afterthought he focused on the hydrogen bonds within the water and pulled them into a sphere from which he drained the heat causing it to freeze. He dropped the ice cube on a tray as way of explanation for the cooling effect but realised he needed have bothered, with his pain eased and body mending the patient had fallen asleep he smiled "Nurse" came the cool and the young pirate shook his head as he set off to start the whole thing over again, sense, assess, treat and train all rolled into a single exercise. It may seem idiotic but he couldn't deny how effective it had been.

Reduce Injury (Level 8 Training Start)

As he turned to the call he felt the tingle of danger sense surge up his spine. He had no wish to explore what this meant in an infirmary but, reacted to the shout and saw a whippid, tall and broad even by their species standards but, their eyes were pinprick points, he saw the spines jutting from their arm and groaned. Grannids, a mammalian species native to the planet were considered good sport for hunting but, their spines were soaked in psychedelic rage inducing neurotoxins that had those unfortunately afflicted attacking anything that pissed them off and in their current state that could be anything and was likely everything.

Open as he was to the Force he started to take control of it once more pulled the swirling intricate layers of power towards him, with each breath he pulled more of the energy towards him and started to rebuild the outline that he usually maintained between himself and the world around him, only this time he didn't use his strength but, rather that of the Force itself, he wasn't creating a barrier that separated what was inside from the outside using his power but using the power that surrounded him to create an obstruction in its own path, a void or buffer through which it didn't pass. The mindset was different but one that allowed him to remain open to the Force as he currently was without obstruction as he could pass through it freely. The control saw the natural flows of the empyrean energies and weave them together, allowing the ordered strands to interlock and play over one another, he continued to create this lattice increasing the density of the Force flowing around in a controlled and ordered manner. The platted lengths grew thicker and longer, and he realised that the ropes of controlled power were starting to form near where his core normally settled; upper torso, slightly to the dorsal side and central, essentially ending up somewhere between his shoulder blades and resting on his spine. Once he realised this he sent the tendrils out in two directions as they seemed to grow outwards from either end, wrapping around his torso and up to his neck. Then as he was about extend it further an impact over his chest tore the wavering lines apart and he was launched back. The split ropes writhed as if in pain started to grow erratically losing cohesion and becoming a mess as roots and filaments spread from the torn ends and tried desperately to continue growing but the chaotic nature of the attempts doomed it to failure. His mind registered the blood trickling from wounds in his chest and his subconscious mind played back what his eyes had seen but mind hadn't registered wrapped up as he was, the whippid stomping towards him and lashing out at the still prey that seemed to be defying it. He cursed but, realised that the wounds were shallower than shut a hit would indicate and his bones seemed fine, such a blow should have at least cracked a rib or two.

He dove to one side to get behind a bed as his attacker shot forward once more. Mentally he cut away the writhing mess of filaments that had started to sprout from the broken ends of the outline he had tried to form and grasped control once more. He dragged the two ends together and twisted until the ordered lines of twisting power were aligned once more. He fused the shortened chains together once more and continued with growing them. This time he split his focus between the Force and his situation so was able to dodge the coming blow but the back hand sweep crashed into his side. The bound ropes this time compressed, spreading out and thinning, he could feel the impact of the blow lessen and spread through before the momentum and power of the blow bowled him over. The stretched coils tried to retract and reform into the thicker roped once more but, the action was too quick, the taught ropes rebound caused additional stress on the structure he had formed and the coils expanded and contracted in short order ultimately tearing themselves apart leaving him unprotected as he dove forward through the legs of the rampaging patient. Reaching out to the Force he started once more this time the action was slightly quicker but, he had to devote a lot of thought to it, the building this time was thicker, greater elasticity added by slowing the growth of the rope but this also reduced the effective area it covered. He was tempted to give up and switch to what he normally did to shield his Force self but, as he ducked the next blow he knew to do so would be to weaken himself in an already vulnerable spot as his heightened sense in this state were the only things keeping him a step ahead. So he walked the tightrope, as he built anew the strands, thicker, stronger than before he could feel the becalming of the Force near him and enhancing of the chaotic dance of power around him. He realised he was pulling heavily on the ordered nature of the flow but, not exclusively and as he felt that imbalance he watched as the next blow glanced off of his side, the ordered nature of the Force absorbed, stretched and acted as one might suspect but, the chaotic energy trapped in the fibres started to dance and flicker, the energy not directed the way one would expect and started to contract and expand rapidly within the coils creating a disharmonious note in the power and... The new strands tore apart at the weakened edge and he felt the hot stab of pain in his leg. Order was needed here, not chaos. If he continued to draw on the power as he was he would just cause greater instability in the structure and weaken it.

Taking a ragged breath he purged his mind, diving into deep meditation for a moment to reassert himself, balance was his watch word but, right now that balance was what endangered him. He purged the emotions he felt from others, expanding his inner self to almost instantly reassert the barrier he normally used to denote himself in the flow of the Force. The imagined this new barrier however to be covered in thousands maybe millions of little barbs, hooked and prepared to snag the power of the Force ropes he formed and hook them to himself. As he thought about this he allowed those barbs to shift from being hooks to being a network that spread throughout his form, thousands of filaments that linked a complex network within his form. This was a shunting network, allowing for power to shift from point to point or to be drained way in the chaos of a chaotic disturbance but, the hooks could also move, along tacks on the surface. He knew that in his state and likely whenever something like this may be needed he wouldn't have the time to create a full barrier between him and the world. When the building restarted he allowed it to emanate from the same point but, instead of coiling it around his torso as a single long rope he created a thick plat long enough to stretch from shoulder to shoulder and then stopped, capping the ends and hooking it into the network, he imagined the fierce hooks moving, circling and skimming over his surface barrier, the rope followed shifted where it was directed but it was nowhere near enough to protect him as it was so as he danced out of range he set about creating another strip, then another. Having multiple moving layers gave him greater flexibility and would reduce the impact of damage done to the barrier between him and injury as a single break no longer meant restarting from scratch. As he moved he made use of this to enhance his guard from the massive impacts of his attackers blows but, though the damage was reduced, he couldn't keep it up for long and eventually he was caught by the attack grasped between strong hands he thought it was the end. Then a shot rang out, the whippid roared and tossed Xerxes aside, his relief was short lived as he heard the shattering of glass and felt the tinkle of multiple impacts on his skin.

Cursing he pulled all the plats he had formed to his back, there they coiled and interwove over one another as he tried to imagine a multilayered lattice through which no single spot only had a single layer and no clear path through. If he was lucky the impact would be solid and get spread over his back. A thick rope coiled around his neck and cradled the back of his skull to protect his head and the delicate grey matter. He felt the impact first and knew his wish hadn't been granted. A single sharp point impact struck in the lower right thoracic region. He shunted power from his core to enhance the protection there but felt the ropes of power stretch, fray and finally become sliced through, all he managed to do was shift some of the impact and change the directionality slightly as the ropes shifted along the network meaning he ended up being sliced by the spar of rebar rather than properly impaled, his remaining rope were compressed and split by the impact wit the ground and everything went white for a moment before focus returned "At least I'm alive" chuckled just before the full impact of his injury struck him.

Force Healing (Level 9 Training Start)

"Sithspit" it was the only thing Xerxes had time to say as the emergency shot past him dragged along to surgery. The call was enough and he was out there alongside the bed. As open as he currently was he recognised instantly that the sensation of deep cold that had assailed him as the patient came in was not good, he could feel the fear and trepidation of the staff, the horror of the patients and the panic of the patient as they couldn't feel what they knew to be a terrible wound. He realised a moment later that the cold wasn't someone else's but his own. He looked down and saw the face, his face, covered in blood flecks from coughing, his spectral form looked down at itself and saw the gash in its side, an open and jagged wound that seemed to have torn through his right side, splitting open the flesh in a long gash but that had mercifully not punched through and impaled him though focusing his senses he knew that his lung was cut, his ribs chipped where the rebar had caught as it slid along them. Blood was spilling from his body like nobody's business, he was vaguely aware as Dr H'ril and Dr Gorman entered and took over, good. Whisked into surgery he ran through the important aspects of trauma treatment, ABC, Airway, Breathing then circulation. As he focused his spectral senses on feeling what his body was trying to shut out to prevent shock from claiming him he knew his airway was fine. A racking cough, a gurgle of liquid told him that his breathing however was likely to be compromised if he did nothing. He concentrated his mind's eye, delving into the physical form ignoring the fact that it was his own and not another patient, he rode the ethereal current into his lungs and saw what he had expected, a gapping slash in a lobe of the right lung. Blood was pouring in from the wound and if he hadn't been reflexively coughing could have drowned him.

His disembodied mind looked at the damage and set about doing what it could, he infused energy into the cells getting them to align along the wound, the cells fused and he created a thick webbing of force energy to capture the blood flowing in, he triggered the pathways to encourage the platelets to fuse and stick together and the blood vessels to constrict as the wound was scabbed over. The clot needed to harden and plug the wound so he focused on accelerating the process to seal the wound, however, that only stopped the immediate issue of excessive bleeding, his breathing would still be laboured. He could see the way the wound had opened up in his side and could sense the way the cells wished to realign. The larger multinucleated fused cells at the edge of the wound would be his anchor points. He wove the Force, taking the fine filaments that had made up the greater ropes earlier to create something more akin to a suture and drove it into points where he wanted to anchor them. Carefully he pulled the sutures tighter and tighter drawing the two edges closer together. He didn't pull them tight, for to do so would cause a lip or fold in the tissue he didn't want. Instead once they were close enough together he flooded the area with the more ordered Force flow, enhancing the natural mechanisms of the body encouraging the formation of collagen to bind the edges together. He then turned his attention to the excess blood in his lungs and used the more chaotic powers to start to break it down, ripping the cells and plasma down to it constituent parts and finding the proteins and similar that he needed. As the lips of the wound were bound to one another by the collagen he manoeuvred the raw material he had gathered from the breakdown of the blood to create a pool of serum around the wound and then encouraged the cells to enter into a rapid proliferative stage, he fed the cells with all they needed, ensuring that the proteins, lipids and nucleic acids required were all there and ready to be synthesised into something new, something productive. With the Force pulsing through the nutrient bath than he was feeding them the cells started to rapidly swell, the membranes increasing and the DNA within the nucleus swelled. As soon as they were ready he encouraged the cells to divide and spread into the gap. What would normally take days he sped up to take place in minutes as cells rapidly filled in the gap sealing away his lung once more.

The tissue was pink and still weak but he would have to let it mature at a more normal rate, the wound was closed but blood flow had yet to return to normal. The clot that had saved him initially now posed an issue as it was limiting blood flow through the new issue, in his haste to repair the wound he had neglected to account for his vascular system. With B now clear as it was going to get he had to be careful of getting C correct. He didn't simply disrupt the clot with a sonic pulse as he could have, but that ran the risk of causing a blockage elsewhere and wouldn't really fix the issue. Instead his focus went to the vessel walls, the clot occluded them in their constricted state but, if he could cause the vessel to grow as he had the lung, but to do so was risky, his lung could afford to generate some scar tissue, it wouldn't affecting him much, but a defect in a blood vessel could spell doom later on. All it took as a small notch for cells to attach to and eventually he'd be looking at arthrosclerosis and potential blockage. So what he did was grasp the clot in the Force and slowly but surely disassembly it as he had the blood in his chest but leaving the fibrogen fibres which he used to create a scaffold for the vessels to encourage the newly proliferated venous tissue to grow along them and enclose the wound. He created a sheathe of Force energy that connected the separated vessels together and used the remainder of the clot to create tube and solidified it as best he could and the blood started to flow back into the damaged section of his lung and he could feel his breathing ease as his lungs efficiency returned to normal. The elongation of the blood vessels cells was slower than the rapid healing of the pulmonary tissue simply because it was a lesser concern to him that his ability to breath the cells would hopefully have created the new vessel walls by the time the Force on the sheathe waned. With his most pressing injuries seen to Xerxes turned his attention outward once more so as to hear what his doctors had to way and see what his next priority in this battle to save his life should be.

Pulling himself back out of the physical was easier than he thought, maybe because he had never actually truly regained it. He stood beside the table and could see that the doctors were hard at work, they had opened the wound to get a better look and had started to repair the more serious damaged blood vessels that had prevented him from bleeding to death. "The Kid is strong" Gorman muttered as he worked "He's fighting with us" H'ril replied indicating the patina of energy sparking over part of the wound. They had both taken to calling him Kid in private and he couldn't help but smile at that, it made him feel like he belonged. "We don't need to worry about the lung, he's put to use the ABC even in this state, I guess it was the right call to use a nerve blocker rather than a soporific" Gorman stated looking at the faint colour of new flesh sealing the laceration in the lobe "I must say it was instinct more than anything, I just felt" "That this gave him the best chance" H'ril nodded. As the bothan and ho'din continued to work on him he decided to leave the soft tissue up to them they seemed to have things under control and focused on the structural damage.

He concentrated and sent a pulse of energy throughout his body scanning for bone damage but, had to stop as a jolt of grinding pain wrenched through his chest. He returned to the damaged lung and saw the issue, as the nerve blockers wore off due to his accelerated healing process he was starting to feel the damage and as the doctors moved the tissue they were aggravating the cracked ribs. No, they were fractured, clean through, he smiled and knew what to focus on next. He grasped the ribs in his mind this time wrapping them in the Force and then dragging them back into place by creating a pulley like system that ratcheted the two parts close to one another and then bore imaginary pins to hold the pulley in place. He then focused on creating a subtle matrix between the two ends. He then created a bolus of adhesive Force energy and glued the edges together. The next part was a bit more difficult as he started to leach the calcium from his system, taking what he had excess of and trying to pool it around the broken ends to add a more solid matrix to the Force contrived one he had put together and allowing the empyrean to infuse his body creating a seed bed for the osteoblasts to start to proliferate and start to rebuild the bone thicker and stronger than before. He imagined the physical knitting together of the two halves as the cells went to work and over compensated once they met in the middle creating the callous often seen over old breaks. The osteoclasts would also be hard at work to breakdown that over secretion and create as stable a bone as possible, the two cells working in concert to repair and remodel the fracture.

The last thing he did was to pulse energy to the marrow in his femurs and sternum, he kicked up the accelerate healing he usually employed and started to push his system as hard as he could to create new RBCs and platelets to keep his heart pumping and oxygen getting to his brain, the last thing he needed was to survive this only to be brain damaged by hypoxia. He also increased the proliferation of NK cells, C1 complement complex proteins and other innate immune responses; right now he didn't need adaptive so much as first response. Killing the more common infection variant as quickly as possible would hopefully decrease his complication rate after all of this. As he released the last pulse of energy through his system he felt his disconnection from his physical lessen and the pain returned in earnest and his mind started to finally shut down. The last sounds he heard were from H'ril, "Seems we've stabilised him, though this is the first time a patients helped so much in his own surgery".
